1: Hasegawa Asahi -New Name Change From Holding Name

OSCAR NOTE: the old name was registered in December of 2018, via Drachenwald.

Old Item: Aveline of Knight's Crossing, to be released.
Submitter desires a feminine name.
No changes.

The College of Arms rejected the original name but stated with the correction, the new name that would be acceptable. Here is the relevant section of the email...

"Fortunately, reliable documentation is available for the use of the element no in Japanese feminine names. In Meigaku: Designing and Documenting Japanese Names by Solveig Throndardottir (KWHSS 2017), we find the pattern of uji(Clan Name) + no + Given Name for aristocratic Japanese women.

However, we have no evidence showing Hasegawa as an uji clan name. Hasegawa is a period Japanese surname, but not one of the uji type. It is found as the surname of the artist Hasegawa Tōhaku (1539-1610), a significant figure in Japanese landscape painting. We would change the name to Hasegawa _ Asahi..."

2: Marit Matsdotter -New Name Change & New Badge

OSCAR NOTE: the old name was registered in February of 1998, via Drachenwald.

(Fieldless) a beaver courant proper

Old Item: Isabel du Talus, to be retained as an alternate name.

Marit is a Swedish female given name dated to 1490 in Swedish Feminine Given Names from SMP by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/swedish/smp/) s.n. Margareta (http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/swedish/smp/margareta.html).

Matsdotter is a patronymic byname meaning 'daughter of Mats'. <Matson> ('son of Mats') is dated to 1461 in a letter dated 28 July 1461 found in Diplomatarium Fennicum, DF 3156 (http://df.narc.fi/document/3156): "Gregirs Matson". (#1)

3: Marit Matsdotter -New Blazon Change

OSCAR is unable to find the name, either registered or submitted.

Argent, a beaver courant proper between a cloud and a base wavy azure.

Notes: The name change from Isabel du Talus to Marit Matsdotter is submitted in this letter.

I, [redacted], known in the SCA as Isabel du Talus, request that the blazon for my registered device Argent, a natural beaver courant proper between a cloud and a base wavy azure (registered in February of 1998 via Drachenwald) be changed to Argent, a beaver courant proper between a cloud and a base wavy azure.

In many cases SCA heraldry makes a difference between a heraldic depiction and a "natural" one. However, only one "natural beaver" has registered, being this device.

The currently registered blazon has both "natural" and "proper" in it. "Proper" ought to be sufficient to depict the emblazon. According to Pictorial Dictionary of Heraldry (https://mistholme.com/?s=beaver):

"The beaver is drawn in heraldic art with a broad, flat tail, as seen in nature - the tail is the beaver's defining trait - but there's little further resemblance between the herald's depiction and the naturalist's. (The Society makes an exception when the beaver is blazoned "proper"; it's then colored brown, and is more likely to be drawn naturalistically.)"

For example, in 2018, Shire of Auenwald registered a quite "natural" looking beaver that was tinctured Or, and yet the registration was blazoned Azure, a beaver passant guardant within a laurel wreath Or, a chief nebuly argent.

Please also see the attached emblazon from Siebmacher (1605) with a "beaver proper" in the arms of von Bibra (100).
