Monthly timeline

  • This month's Letter of Intent (LoI) will be assembled by the end of the month.
  • Please send all submissions to Edelweiss Herald. Submissions received and confirmed paid by the end of the month will make it to next month's letter.

Plentiful heralding in Spring Crown

Drachenwald College of Heralds thanks the heralds who gathered in impressive numbers to serve in the Crown Tournament! Especially...

  • ...Þora Sumarliðadóttir, Herald-in-Charge.
  • ...Selanda de la Rosa for the help and experienced advice, and Tamara Samuilova for administrative support and working magic with the OP, that they provided for the Herald-in-Charge prior to the event.
  • ...the two teams that serviced the list fields for three hours! Kerttu Katariinantytär Roisko, Kytte of the Lake, and Matheus Leuchensis; Agnes Odygd, Jasper Rose, and Katharina van Antwerpen. Without them, and the wonderfully organized list mistresses, Magdalen Yrjänäntytär and Ragnell Caxtone, such a great tourney would never have operated so well.
  • ...all those presenting the participants in the Crown Tournament (in the order of first address; some served several couples): Irene nyn Doole, Katharina van Antwerpen, Edricus filius Offaeus, Agnes Odygd, Kareina Talventytär, Þórólfr Blót-Úlfsson, Jasper Rose, Alexandre Lerot d`Avignon, Harald Krake, Brendan the Tired, Vilhelm Torbjörnsson, Johanna aff Hucka, Skafte Vaghorne, Gerhardt von Wüstenburg, Danel Styringheim, and Kytte of the Lake. Selanda de la Rosa and Helga Hammarskogen were not themselves attending the event, but their words were heard.
  • ...Matheus Leuchensis (Aros Pursuivant) and Anna de Byxe (Edelweiss Herald) for offering heraldic consultations.
  • ...the court heralds for Crown, Anna de Byxe, AstridH Thorkilsdotter, and Gerhardt von Wüstenburg; for Nordmark, Þórólfr Blót-Úlfsson; for Aarnimetsä, UlfR Knutsson.

A bizarre occurrence in the submissions office

Silly-tabards must be to blame for this irregular publication; when has the Letter of Intent ever been published on the first of the month?!

1: Barbara von Krempe -Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in January of 2014, via Drachenwald.

Per fess wavy argent and azure, two bars wavy counterchanged between a lymphad under full sail gules and a swan naiant argent with a pearled coronet Or.

Court Barony 2018-10-13, thus may have a coronet.

The submission, then Per fess wavy argent and azure, a fess wavy counterchanged between a gatehouse gules and a swan naiant argent, was previously returned in LoAR 01-2014 (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2014/01/14-01lar.html#161):

This device is returned for conflict with the badge of Balthazar van der Brugghe, Per fess wavy argent and azure, a fess wavy counterchanged. There is a DC for the addition of the secondary charges, but nothing else.

If there had not been a conflict, the device would have been returned for redraw, for violating SENA A2C3 which states that "Elements must be drawn at an appropriate size for their role in an armorial submission..." In this case, the fess here is drawn far too narrow; as a central ordinary, it is the primary charge in the device, and as such should be far more substantial.

In addition, as this would have been the defining instance of a gatehouse in Society armory, we also require documentation of its suitability as a charge. None was provided.

Initial resubmission, also Per fess wavy argent and azure, a fess wavy counterchanged between a gatehouse gules and a swan naiant argent, was returned in kingdom (https://oscar.sca.org/kingdom/kingsingleitem.php?kingdom=14&id=62826) due to the same conflict as in the original case.

This is a redesign.

5: Knight's Crossing, Barony of -New Order Name & New Badge

OSCAR thinks the name is registered as Knight's Crossing, Barony of in February of 1982, via the East.

Gesellschaft der Sterne

Per pale gules and Or, five estoile in chevron inverted counterchanged a mound vert.

No changes.

Order name form as <Gesellschaft der ...> (translates to 'Society of the ...') can be found among others, here in the example of <Gesellschaft der Leon> (Society of the Lions) from the website:

http://heraldry.sca.org/names/order/new/Fraternal_Knightly_Organizations.html?fbclid=IwAR1d_9LnNHB2a sSB-KK39-b3bKQ7g2WlCDK9K6gPF4LMeuvqUubT9fvA6Ec#Lion%201%20(Germany)

<Sterne> (translates to 'Stars') is the german plural form of <Stern> (translates to 'Star').

This follows the form of Order names, where the Designator is <Gesellschaft> and <Sterne> the substantive element.

6: Ludvig af Eke -New Name & New Device

Per fess sable and azure, a fess wavy between an oak sprig fructed and three salmon naiant argent

7: Magdelena Grace Vane -Resub Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in January of 2009, via Drachenwald.

(Fieldless) A bee proper sustaining an annulet argent.

The badge was previously returned twice by Laurel. This is a redesign.

LoAR 06-2015 (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2015/06/15-06lar.html#239)

Magdelena Grace Vane. Badge. (Fieldless) In pale a bee proper holding an annulet argent surrounding a capital letter M gules.

This device is returned for violating SENA A3D2a, for having "slot machine" armory, more than two types of charge in the same group. Precedent states:

"This device violates our ban on so-called 'slot machine' armory. There are three types of charge in the secondary charge group: annulets,

triquetras, and a phoenix. Unless the submitter can provide evidence that the annulet interlaced with a triquetra is a period heraldic motif considered to be a single charge, we will continue to interpret a triquetra and interlaced with an annulet as two charges. [Catherine

Wentworth of Cambridge, R-Outlands, August 2008 LoAR]"

We have a similar situation here, with three types of charge in the primary charge group: a bee, an annulet and the letter M.

LoAR 09-2017 (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2017/09/17-09lar.html#178):

Magdelena Grace Vane. Badge. (Fieldless) In pale a bee proper sustaining an annulet argent surrounding and conjoined to a capital letter M gules.

This device is returned for violation of SENA A3D2a, which prohibits more than two charges in a charge group. In the March 2009 LoAR Cover Letter, it was ruled that "A widget within an annulet will continue to be considered a primary widget and a secondary annulet, or a primary annulet and secondary widget, when those charges are the only charges on the field. Which of the two charges is primary depends, as always, on the emblazon. When both are present in a design as part of a primary charge group, or where they would be expected to be a secondary charge, the widget and annulet will both be considered part of the same group."

This design, therefore, has three charges (bee, letter, annulet) in the primary charge group, and must be returned.

8: Magnildis Tillknena -Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in December of 2018, via Drachenwald.

Argent, a chevron raguly on the upper edge sable and in base a gillyflower gules slipped and leaved vert.

The device was previously returned by Laurel in LoAR 12-2018 (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2018/12/18-12lar.html#150):

Magnildis Tillknena. Device. Argent, in bend three gillyflowers gules, slipped and leaved vert.

This device is returned for conflict with the device of Thomas Buttesthorn of Ayle, Argent, in bend three apothecary roses proper [Rosa Gallica Officinalis Rubra]. There is no DC for slipping, leaving the only difference to be gleaned from the type of flower. The type of flower, while worth a DC in some cases, is never worth an SC, which is what would be needed to clear this conflict. We decline to rule at this time whether there is a DC between a rose and a gillyflower.

This is a complete redesign.

9: Saidra von Yschil -New Name

Submitter desires a feminine name.
No major changes.
Sound most important.
Meaning most important.

Saidra is taken from the Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources (http://dmnes.org/name/Saidra). The name is French and documented in the year 1012.

Yschil is a place name, which was used for my home town in Austria in the 13th century (the modern place name is Bad Ischl). It is documented in a letter from Otto, bishop of Passau, to the abbess of the convent in Traunkirchen in the year 1262. A readable print of this letter can be found in the book "Urkunden-Buch des Landes ob der Enns" (Charter book for the principality "Land ob der Enns"). This book is included in google books https://ia801408.us.archive.org/30/items/urkundenbuchdes02landgoog/urkundenbuchdes02landgoog.pdf

(book page 299 contains the letter in latin, see also attached screenshot and highlighted place name Yschil)

Old Item: Vert, a horse's head couped Or and a bordure erminois., to be retained as a badge.

12: Torleif Viðfari -Resub Device

OSCAR thinks the name is registered as Torleif Vi?fari in November of 2018, via Drachenwald.

Per pale purpure and gules, a chevron argent surmounted by a lion Or and in canton a mullet of six points argent.

The device was returned in LoAR 11-2018 (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2018/11/18-11lar.html#130):

Torleif Viðfari. Device. Per pale purpure and gules, a chevron argent surmounted by a lion maintaining an arrow bendwise sinister inverted Or and in canton a mullet of six points argent.

This device is returned for having multiple charge groups overall. In the August 2018 return of the device of Laura Rodriguez Figueroa, it was noted:

Finally, this device is returned for having multiple charge groups overall. Appendix I states that "There can be only one overall charge group in any design." As the frying pan is maintained, it is in a separate charge group from the cow.

In this submission we have the same issue: two groups of overall charges -- the lion and the arrow it holds -- which is grounds for return.

In this redesign the arrow has been removed thus leaving only one overall charge group.
