Calontir ILoI dated 2018-08-24

Wesaþ hal!

To Brigida von München, Gold Falcon, and to the esteemed members of the College of Heralds comes this missive from Dorcas Whitecap, Eyas. I seek your wise counsel on the following submissions, to prepare them for registration.

1: Ashland de Mumford -Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name on the Calontir LoI of January 31, 2017 as submitted.

Purpure, on a pile cotised issuant from sinister argent, a wooden bow proper with a threaded needle nocked purpure and in dexter chief a ducal coronet Or

This device was returned on the April 2017 LoAR:

Purpure, on a pile cotised issuant from sinister argent, a wooden bow proper with a threaded needle nocked purpure.

This device must be returned for having two different charge groups as tertiaries. While a bow and arrow are considered to be a single charge when they are in their standard, expected position, this is not true a bow and needle. Considered as two separate charges, the needle lacks the visual weight of the bow. If these were directly on the field, the bow would be considered the primary charge and the needle a sustained secondary. As tertiary charges the bow and arrow are thus considered to be in separate charge groups. Therefore this runs afoul of SENA Appendix I which states "A single charge group may only have one tertiary charge group on it."

This redraw depicts the needle with similar visual weight as the bow, and thus they comprise a single charge group.

The secondary ducal coronet is new. Submitter was awarded a Duchy on 2018-07-14 via Calontir.

2: Batačiqan-nu kö'ün Ashir -New Name & New Device

Batačiqan-nu kö'ün Ashir

Azure, on a lozenge argent a phoenix sable enflamed gules issuant from a ducal coronet sable

Culture (Mongolian) most important.

Batačiqan-nu kö'ün - patronymic form of Bataciqan, constructed based on the example found in "Middle Mongol Grammar for SCA Names" by Ursula Georges http://heraldry.sca.org/names/mongolgrammar.html

Ashir - Arabic masculine name, found in "The Encyclopedia of Islam" edited by B. Lewis, et al. Title page and relevant page included. "Ibn Ashir, Sufi of the Marinid period, patron saint of the town of Sale, where he died in 764 or 765/1362-3. He was a native of Jimena in Spain ..."

SENA Appendix C supports combining Mongol and Arabic name elements after 1100.

Submitter was awarded a Duchy on 2017-07-08 via Calontir.

(Fieldless) A seraph proper

Submitter's previous badge, Sable, a left step azure was on the Calontir ILoI dated 2017-12-25. It was withdrawn after a conflict was discovered. This is a complete redesign. (This will be considered new at Laurel if/when it reaches that level.)

7: Michele dei Medici -Resub Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in May of 2012, via Calontir.

Per fess gules and azure, a ladle and a repier both fesswise reversed argent

This badge was returned on the November 2017 LoAR.

This badge is returned for violating SENA A2C1 which requires that "Elements must be drawn in their period forms and in a period armorial style." The hilt of this rapier appears to be a hand-bell design not unlike a modern saber. The quillons which define the rapier as a heraldic charge are absent, and the knucklebow flows directly into the cup-style hilt. No evidence was presented, and none was found in commentary, demonstrating that this guard is period either as a heraldic charge or an artifact. Absent such evidence, the design is returned for a redraw.

The ladle is likewise not drawn in a period form. The ladles we see in period images had the handle parallel to the lip, not at right angles to it. No evidence was provided and none could be found for the depiction of a ladle in the submitted configuration. However, this configuration of ladle appears in the submitter's device, and is thus allowable under the Existing Registration Allowance.

This resubmission uses the depiction of a cup-hilted rapier from the PicDic and the same ladle as in the submitter's registered device (see attached).
