3: Havarr Refskegg -Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in November of 2018, via Calontir.

Per pale wavy vert and argent, an antler and an oak leaf counterchanged

Original was returned on November 2018 LoAR. (https://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2018/11/18-11lar.html#108)

Vert, a tree blasted issuant from a sword hilt within a bordure argent.

This device is returned for conflict with the device of Ioseph of Locksley, the Rhymer, Vert, a tree eradicated argent with one DC for the addition of the bordure; with the device of Ygraine of the Seven Oaks, Per saltire vert and sable, an oak tree eradicated within a bordure argent with one DC for changes to the field; with the badge of Mirabel Wynne, Vert, a tree blasted and eradicated argent between in fess two mullets Or all within a bordure argent with one distinct change for the secondary mullets; with the device of Muirenn na Tengad, Vert, a tree blasted and in base an open book, a bordure argent with one DC for the removal of the book; with the device of Jóra í Holti, Vert, a tree blasted argent and a bordure argent semy of roundels vert with one DC for the removal of roundels; with the device of Morgan Attewode, Vert, on an aspen tree argent a sword inverted sable, a bordure argent with one DC for the removal of the sword; and with the device of Lilias de Cheryngton, Vert, a crequier within a bordure embattled argent with one DC for changing the type of peripheral charge.

In each of these, there is not a second DC for having the tree issue from the sword hilt. Several commenters noted that they didn't notice the hilt, nor felt it distinctive enough to be recognizable.

In addition, this device is returned for lack of documentation of the practice of having charges such as a tree issue from the hilt of a sword.

This submission is a complete redesign.

6: Oddný Óttarsdóttir -New Name Change (NP) & Resub Device

OSCAR NOTE: the old name was registered in September of 2019, via Calontir.

Quarterly gules and sable, an otter statant and another counter statant Or

Old Item: Kenda Óttarsdóttir, to be released.
Submitter desires a feminine name.

Oddný - Old Norse feminine name, found in Geirr Bassi, p. 13

Óttarsdóttir - registered byname, used per Existing Registration Allowance, SENA PN1B2g

Original device returned on the September 2019 LoAR under the name Kenda Óttarsdóttir

Gules, between three otters passant "in annulo" Or an escallop inverted argent, a bordure Or.

This device is returned for violation of SENA A3D2c, which requires that charges be in a unified posture and orientation. In the December 2018 return of the device of Eilína Roðbjartsdóttir, it was ruled:

In the December 2017 return of Branán Mac Branáin's device, it was ruled:

In annulo is a term used to describe charges arranged in such a way that they form an annulet, or circle. It is possible for a number (usually 6 or more) of any type of charge to be in annulo by following the path of the annulet, and certain long, skinny charges like serpents or stag's attires can be in annulo with only one charge. However, when there are five or fewer charges in the charge group, the ability of charges to represent an annular formation becomes more difficult and dependent upon the shape and orientation of the charges. Three wolves rampant, heads to center, cannot be in annulo, because their arrangement and orientation do not suggest an annulet. However, three wolves courant can be in annulo, provided their bodies curve and conform to the shape of an annulet.

In this submission, the bears are passant, with straight backs that flex inwards, and with lowered paws that rest on a straight plane. No circle is formed or even implied by their placement, so they cannot be considered "in annulo" per the above ruling.

In like manner, these otters form a triangle, not a circle, and so they cannot be considered "in annulo" under current precedent.

This submission is a complete redesign.

10: Þióðrikr Ulfsbani -New Request for Name Reconsideration Change

OSCAR is unable to find the name, either registered or submitted.

Old Item: Þeodric Ulfsbani, to be released.
Spelling (Þióðrikr Ulfsbani) most important.

The August 2023 LoAR had this to say when the name <Þeodric Ulfsbani> was registered:

The submitter might be interested to know that the given name Þióðrikr appears on the Rök rune stone. If they are interested in the fully Old Norse name Þióðrikr Ulfsbani, they may make a request for reconsideration.

When informed of the registration <Þeodric Ulfsbani>, the submitter replied:

Regarding the Rök runestone, that would be wonderful if it could be updated to Þióðrikr as that was the initial intent but due to a communication error with the heralds, it was submitted as the later variation of Þeodric. So if thay were updated to the Old Norse variant it would mean a lot.

In the original submission (https://oscar.sca.org/index.php?action=145&id=122305), Gunnvor Orle commented:

The inscription on the Rök runestone in Östergötland, Sweden, is referred to in scholarly works as Ög136 $ , and dates to the 800s. Checking the Rundata database, the name is rendered in runes as þiaurikR. The Old East Norse transcription is given as <ÞioðrikR>. Later in the same inscription is a man named <Rugulfr>, which shows us the "wolf" element.

The Old West Norse form of the name is <Þióðrekr>, which is found as the name of one of the Icelandic settlers. Late in the Viking Age the spelling becomes <Þiðrekr> (Biskupa sögur). See E.H. Lind Dopnamn cols. 1128-1129 s.n. <Þióðrekr>.

11: Verena Näherin -New Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in January of 2011, via Calontir.
