Northshield ILoI dated 2023-09-28

Greetings unto Her Excellency Ysolt Polaris, the Heralds of Northshield, and our companions from the other kingdoms of the Known World. Herein please find the Northshield combined Pennsic and September Internal Letter.

1: Belle de la Tour -New Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in September of 2017, via Ansteorra.

Per pale azure and purpure, a tower issuant from base argent and in chief two bezants each charged with a bell sable

Previous submission rejected on kingdom level, submitted via Ansteorra: https://oscar.sca.org/kingdom/kingsingleitem.php?kingdom=8&id=74755. Resubmission is a total redesign, clearing the issue.

Device Comments:

Lilie Dubh inghean ui Mordha (Ragged Staff) at 2023-10-05 10:47:18
No conflicts noted, but I cannot see the difference between the azure and purpure. It needs re coloring.

Gunnvor silfraharr (Orle) at 2023-10-05 17:30:48
I, OTOH, can see the difference, and though OSCAR is sorta confused it also sees purple on the right. If that's standard Crayola markers, I'd say let it be.

I've done a recolored version from the line drawing, in case someone decides that's really needed.

1: Image 1

Beatrice Domenici della Campana (Green Staff) at 2023-10-11 19:43:09
OSCAR color correct sees purple (however small an amount), which means it's fine.

We find no conflicts.

This blazon implies the roundels are secondary, which they are not in this picture, in which the tower does not cross the fess line and is of a vaguely equal size to the roundels (especially if we ignore the "issuant" portions, and issuant is generally not worth heraldic difference).

We propose "Per pale azure and purpure, two bezants each charged with a bell sable and a tower issuant from base argent."

We appreciate the double cant, and hope Wreath takes note

2: Catherine Marie Hayes -New Name (NP) & New Device

Please consider the following possible conflicts identified by OSCAR (many will not be conflicts): Caitríona Ross(9/2022), Catriona Roche (5/1992)

Azure, within an orle of lily of the valley, a painter's palette argent conjoined with a paintbrush in pale Or.

Submitter desires a feminine name.
No changes.

July 5, 2023, Marie is documented as a Given Name from 1480 onwards (Given Names from Brittany, 1384-1600

Marie is a Legal given middle name of the submitter. (see attatched file)

https://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#PN1B2e

July 6, 2023, Hayes is listed as a surname (Faire Names for English Folk: Late Sixteenth Century English Names, Chris Laning (SCA: Christian de Holacombe, [email protected])

Name Comments:

Lilie Dubh inghean ui Mordha (Ragged Staff) at 2023-09-29 10:53:49
Let's write this up better:

Catherine is a feminine English given name found in English Given Names from 16th and Early 17th C Marriage Records: Catherine, by Sara L. Uckelman. It is found 43 times in the data, dated to between 1544 and 1619. https://heraldry.sca.org/names/english/parishes/catherine.html

Marie is a feminine Breton given name found in Given Names from Brittany, 1384-1600, by Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn. The name is found between 1480 and 1597. https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/latebreton/

Per SENA Appendix C, English and French can be combined throughout period.

Hayes is an English surname found in Faire Names for English Folk: Late Sixteenth Century English Names, by Chris Laning https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/christian/fairnames/surnames.html

Docs check, construction double given + byname checks for later period English and French. No conflicts noted.

Beatrice Domenici della Campana (Green Staff) at 2023-10-11 20:08:12
There may also be a potential relationship conflict with someone named Marie Hayes, but the NP string is too broad (2813 results) to be useful without the leading Catherine string...

Adding a ^ at the start and a $ at the end narrowed to 190ish results, and we found no relationship conflicts.

Device Comments:

Juetta Copin at 2023-09-29 00:54:58
Is this a period type of palette?

Lilie Dubh inghean ui Mordha (Ragged Staff) at 2023-10-05 10:48:21
Not according to Mistholme - https://mistholme.com/?s=palette

Beatrice Domenici della Campana (Green Staff) at 2023-10-11 20:26:35
Given the recent return of an "orle of birch" (https://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2023/08/23-08lar.html...), and the fact that lily of the valley is not a vine plant naturally, we're uncertain whether this depiction is registerable. We are also confused by an orle that does not meet in base, and by the visual confusion with an ivy vine.

The paintbrush is palewise, not in pale, and the charges are in fess, though the paintbrush may or may not be large enough to be considered co-primary. If it is co-primary, there is likely an orientation issue with it not being actually palewise.

This depiction of an artists palette does not match the period depiction from the picdic and no documentation is provided that it is period.

Aletheia Isidora of Philae (Northclyf) at 2023-10-11 23:02:15
https://oscar.sca.org/index.php?action=145&id=101597 - Kidney shaped artist's palette registered in March 2020. "The submitter documented this form of artist's palette from several period sources, notably the portrait of the Flemish artist Hans Bol (d.1593). This form is now acceptable for our use."

Name was submitted but the forms were separated accidentally, I have been told the name will be included on the next letter.

Lilie Dubh inghean ui Mordha (Ragged Staff) at 2023-10-11 12:04:55
This will mean the device is pended before the name is decided.

Beatrice Domenici della Campana (Green Staff) at 2023-10-11 21:31:31

Augmentation of Arms Comments:

There is a step from core practice for the use of a compass rose. (SENA Appendix G1)

Beatrice Domenici della Campana (Green Staff) at 2023-10-11 21:51:44
This augmentation replaces less than half a charge group, so the only possible conflict is the submitters own original device, which we verified in the O&A.

10: Judith Krähe vom Schwarzwald -New Augmentation of Arms

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in August of 2014, via Æthelmearc.

Vert, a tree blasted and eradicated and on a chief argent three swords palewise sable, and for augmentation in base a feather bendwise argent

Augmentation of Arms Comments:

Beatrice Domenici della Campana (Green Staff) at 2023-10-11 22:18:50
The roots here seem less than needed for eradicated, and are less extensive than in the original registration. Whether this counts as eradicated, or as blazonably identical to her original armory is left as a question for Wreath.

Verified Augmentation in OP, granted 9/10/2022 by Ajax and Gaia.

We find no conflicts.

11: Leonidas Kallis -New Name (NP) & New Device

Sable, on a saltire argent in saltire a trident and a sword in saltire gules

Submitter desires a masculine name.
No holding name.
No major changes.
Meaning (meaning of 'kallis' meaning "The best") most important.

'Leonidas' (Λεωνίδας) is found 102 times in the Lexicon of Greek Personal Names (http://www.lgpn.ox.ac.uk/database/lgpn.php (search for `Starts with' Lewn in Symbol) Catholic Encyclopedia, s.n. St. Leonidas (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/09179a.htm) Saint Leonidas, Bishop of Athens, lived c. 6th century. 'Kallis' is found 29 + 31 + 7 times in the Lexicon of Greek Personal Names ( https://oscar.sca.org/s.php?u=1047 [ clas-lgpn5.classics.ox.ac.uk ] ) as Κάλλις, Καλλίς, Καλλις. These are dated to the classical Greek period.

Lilie Dubh inghean ui Mordha (Ragged Staff) at 2023-09-29 12:02:41
Let's break this up a bit:

Leonidas (Λεωνίδας) is a Greek name found 112 times in the Lexicon of Greek Personal Names (LPGN) https://oscar.sca.org/s.php?u=1048 [ clas-lgpn2.classics.ox.ac.uk ]

Also, Catholic Encyclopedia, sn St. Leonidas https://www.newadvent.org/cathen/09179a.htm shows St. Leonidas in the 6th century.

Kallis is found 29+31+7 times in the LPGN as Κάλλις, Καλλίς, Καλλις. https://oscar.sca.org/s.php?u=1049 [ clas-lgpn5.classics.ox.ac.uk ]

Docs check, construction given + byname checks for Greek (but someone with more Greek than I have, please re-check!), no conflicts noted.

Beatrice Domenici della Campana (Green Staff) at 2023-10-11 22:40:38
We're unable to determine whether Kallis as documented as a byname or a given name, but the 07/23 precedent should allow this construction even if Kallis is an unmodified given name.

Device Comments:

Beatrice Domenici della Campana (Green Staff) at 2023-10-11 22:50:51
We see no style issues and find no conflict.

12: Martin of Northshield -New Name (NP) & New Device

Argent on a pall azure between two hammers in saltire and two wolves rampant addorsed sable, a wheel argent

Submitter desires a masculine name.
No holding name.

Martin is found in DMNES in Germany in Early New High German dated to 1525. Northshield is a branch name registered in July 2004 and is allowed by branch name allowance. Although the submitter would like it to be authentic for 13th/14th century Germany, this name is really intended as a holding name so the submitter has a name to go with his device.

Name Comments:

Lilie Dubh inghean ui Mordha (Ragged Staff) at 2023-09-29 10:56:29
One cannot register a holding name. A holding name is decided by the sovereigns when a name cannot be registered but the device sent with it can. This name will be a regularly registered name. The submitter can change it later, but there will be a cost with it.

Beatrice Domenici della Campana (Green Staff) at 2023-10-11 22:59:45
Names with branch name allowance will never be authentic.

Martin confirmed in DMNES to 1525 Early New High German in Germany.

There is a Michael of Northshield registered, but no other M- given names with "of Northshield".

Device Comments:

Beatrice Domenici della Campana (Green Staff) at 2023-10-11 23:07:31
We see no style issues and find no conflict.

13: Sofonisba Vespasiana Gabrielli -New Alternate Name (NP)

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in April of 2014, via Northshield.

Myskja in gamla Þorbjarnardóttir

Submitter has no preference about the gender of the name.
No major changes.
Language/Culture (Norse) most important.

Nordiskt runnamnslexikon's entry starts: Myskia mn. el. kvn. [Myskia, masculine (personal name) or feminine (personal name).] Sö 173 is taking about two people who jointly raised a runestone in memory of their father and brother, and they're using the... (quickly googles the right term) reflexive possessive third person determiner: sinn (his own, her own, its own, their (plural) own, but is assumed to be plural "their"). https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=ms&i=15206 In Sö 374, the runestone was raised in memory of the previous co-stone raiser, but all we know about Myskia is that Máni was "Myskiu broður" or "Myskia's brother." https://skaldic.org/db.php?id=16276&if=runic&table=mss The third one Sö 13 is fragmentary and, like Sö 173 is big on using plurals, which don't tell us much. https://skaldic.org/db.php?table=mss&id=15957 Skaldic Project - manuscript/inscription information We do not have sufficient information from the runestones cited to determine whether Myskia is female or male, and thus we are requesting the benefit of the doubt for this submitter to use this as a feminine given name and with a -dottir byname. in gamla is found as a feminine byname meaning old on p. 21 of Geirr Bassi. Þorbjarnardóttir is one of the patronymic examples on p. 18 of Geirr Bassi.

Alternate Name Comments:

Lilie Dubh inghean ui Mordha (Ragged Staff) at 2023-09-29 11:15:06
Let's break up this wall of text for commenters:

Myskja is an Old Norse name found in the Nordisk Runnamnslexikon of Lena Petersen where it is shown as a masculine name (mn. el. kvn.).

On the Skaldic Project website, however, under Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages, we find runestone Sö 173, https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=ms&i=15206 which states "Myskja and Manni/Máni had these monuments raised in memory of their brother Hróðgeirr and their father Holmsteinn".

Another runestone, Sö 374, states "had the stone raised in memory of Manni/Máni, Myskja's brother" https://skaldic.org/db.php?id=16276&if=runic&table=mss

A third runestone, Sö 13, is fregmentary, but states "Víkingr and Myskja, they ... this ... in memory of Sigbjǫrn ... their..." https://skaldic.org/db.php?table=mss&id=15957

From these runestones we cannot say whether Myskja is a feminine or masculine name, so we go with a feminine name, and add these following name elements to this submission:

in gamla is a feminine byname meaning 'old' and found on p 21 of Geir Bassi

Þorbjarnardóttir is one of the patronymic examples on p 18 of Geir Bassi.

Docs check, construction given + descriptive + patronymic checks for Old Norse. No conflicts noted.

Gunnvor silfraharr (Orle) at 2023-09-29 11:18:38
Note that "mn. el. kvn." means "masculine name or feminine name".

Lilie Dubh inghean ui Mordha (Ragged Staff) at 2023-09-29 12:04:17
Thank you Orle. Noted.

14: Wilhelmina Hellnerin -New Name (NP) & New Device

Argent goutty de sang, a reremouse within an orle sable

Submitter desires a feminine name.
No holding name.
Client requests authenticity for German.
Sound (wil-hel-mina) most important.

Wilhelmina appears in FamilySearch Historical records as a female given name: WILHELMINA HELMUNDT; Female; Christening Date: 09 Feb 1592; Dittingheim, Mosbach, Baden; Batch: C95863-1 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N2KL-1ZG Hellnerin by name from German Names from Nürnberg, 1497: Surnames by Aryanhwy merch Catmael https://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/german/surnamesnurna-m.html

Let's break up the Pennsic wall of text:

Wilhelmina is a German feminine name found in the Family Search records as the christening of Wilhelmin Helmundt, 9 Feb 1592, Dittigheim, Mosbach, Baden. Batch C95863-1 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N2KL-1ZG

Hellnerin is a feminized German surname found in German Names from Nürnberg, 1497: A - M, by Sara L. Uckelman https://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/german/surnamesnurna-m.html

Docs check, construction given + byname checks for German, no conflicts noted.

Beatrice Domenici della Campana (Green Staff) at 2023-10-11 23:23:22
We should probably inform the submitter, who has asked for authenticity for German, that the pronunciation in German would start with a "v" rather than a "w" phoneme.

Device Comments:

Beatrice Domenici della Campana (Green Staff) at 2023-10-11 23:27:08
We see no style issues and find no conflicts.

Thus ends the combined Pennsic and September Internal Letter for Northshield.
