An Tir LoI from Tir Righ dated 2023-08-01

Unto Dame Emma Fetherstan, Laurel Queen of Arms; Viscountess Elisabetta Tommaso di Carduci, Pelican Queen of Arms; Daunt Iago ab Adam, Wreath King of Arms; and all esteemed members of the College of Arms does Vémundr Syvursson, Red Flame Herald, send greetings!

Thanks to the support and encouragement of the Sovreigns of Arms, Fina Black Lion, and many others, this is the Principality of Tir Righ's first External LoI. This is largely an administrative step allowing Tir Righ and An Tir to decouple their submission schedules and give more flexibility in processing, but this is also a significant step for the Principality's College of Heralds.

Thanks to Lilie Ragged Staff, Alys Ogress, and Margaret Dexter Gauntlet for their commentary at the Internal level on these items, especially the names.

It is my privilege and pleasure to offer up the following items for consideration.

1: Aspasia Bevilacqua - New Badge (KLoI)

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in November of 2017, via An Tir.

No conflicts found during internal commentary.

2: Guidobaldo Marco Odo Romeo d'Aquila - New Name (KLoI) (NP) & New Device (KLoI)

Guidobaldo - appears as Guidobaldo Il della Rovere,

Marco - Italian form of Mark -

Odo - Italian Names from the Online Tratte of Office Holders 1282-1532 -

Romeo - Italian Names from the Online Tratte of Office Holders 1282-1532 -

d'Aquila - locative for the city of Aquila -

Names Form Note: The form submitted just has "Guidobaldo d'Aquila" as the submitter could not fit their full intended name in the Society Name slot - Vemundr RF

During internal submission, there was a typo in the filing name's last element, it had been entered as "d'Aqulia", not the intended "d'Aquila". That error was entirely mine and has been fixed in this External.

Several issues were raised in internal commentary by Lilie Ragged Staff.

First, per SENA Appendix A for Italian, triple given names are documented after 1460, so we need to document the whole thing to after 1460. What we have here is possibly a triple given name, an unmarked patronymic and a locative byname.

Second, the Wikipedia link for Guidobaldo does not meet our usual standards for documentation and Lilie RS was able to find the name only as a byname at Italian Names from 1364 and 1441: Name Elements, by Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada - - the name element is listed under bynames as de Guidobaldo Largi.

The submitter has not ticked any of the Boxes of Doom(tm) so we appeal to the assembled heralds of the College for their greater Italian name knowledge.

This name arrived in our Internal Letter with no documentation at all. We thank Alys Orgress and Lillie Ragged Staff for the following, which I have paraphrased and edited lightly.

Jayce is a grey-period English surname, which can be used as a given name per Appendix A.

Jayce is found in the FamilySearch Historical Records as follows:

John Jayce; Male; Burial; 25 Jan 1624; Favershaw, England; Batch: B03581-3 (

George Jayce; Male; Marriage; 14 Jan 1618; Faversham, Kent, England; Batch: M01471-5 (

Alexander is a masculine given name dated to 1585 in the DMNES -

Whitlock is an English surname found in Index of Names in the 1582 Subsidy Roll of London: Surnames of English men & women by Sara L. Uckelman

4: Meadhbh Ingen Tuathail - New Name (KLoI) (NP) & New Device (KLoI)

Argent on a bend purpure three pairs of scissors argent between two frogs statant vert.

Submitter desires a feminine name.
Client requests authenticity for Irish.
Language/Culture (Irish) most important.

Tir Righ submission

Submitter is from Thornwold.

We thank Alys Ogress for the following name documentation, summarized much better than what arrived on our Internal.

She wants authenticity, so let's pin down some dates

Meadhbh is found in Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada's "Index of Names in Irish Annals" ( with Annals dates of 1444, 1502, 1555, 1577, 1582.

Tuathal is also found in Mari's "Index" in the same date range, with Annals dates of 1450, 1512, 1531, 1541 (

In standardized post-1200 Gaelic, we'd expect to see this as Meadhbh inghean Tuathail, but spellings of ingen/inghean in the actual Annals are all over the map. The Annals of Ulster and the Annals of Loch Cé in particular continue to use ingen post-1200, as seen in the dated examples under Meadhbh.

Correction to Name (2023-Aug-02 22:08:42): I had intended to edit the spelling of this name to Meadhbh ingen Tuathail (lower case i on ingen) per Alys Ogres' comment on our Internal, but it slipped through.

Meadhbh ingen Tuathail is the version we intend to register. Apologies for the oversight.
