6: John Mac Fingone - New Household Name (KLoI) & New Badge (KLoI)

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in October of 2014, via Meridies.

Castle Daunt Less

Quarterly sable and azure, in pale a sun argent eclipsed per pale sable and azure and a horse rampant contourny argent.

Sound (Dauntless) most important.

This nonpersonal name construction follows the pattern of "Designator + individual's full name", which is an established pattern listed in the article "Alys's Simple Guide to Household Names", under the heading, "Household Names Based on Personal Names". https://heraldry.sca.org/names/households.html?...

The structure of "Castle X" is patterned after the defining instance of using "Castle" as a household name designator, from the March 2001 LOAR ("Castle Newmarch", Gryffri de Newmarch, 03/01, A-Meridies). Submitter will accept "Castle of Daunt Less" if this name construction is not acceptable.

Castle - Approved household name designator, per SENA Appendix E.

Daunt: Name William Daunt Sex Male Spouse's Name Elizabeth Gill Spouse's Sex Female Event Type Marriage Event Date 23 Jan 1575 Event Place Banbury, Oxfordshire, England Event Place (Original) Banbury, Oxford, England Indexing Batch M02639-1

Less: Name Thomas Less Event Type Burial Event Date 24 Jul 1567 Event Place St Clement, Hastings, Sussex, England No Batch Number

Commenter Iago ab Adam noted that according to SENA NPN4B1 says, "Names may not contain an element or combination of elements that create the appearance of a claim to have a specific rank or title that the submitter does not possess." 'Daunt' is an approved Anglo-Norman alternate title for Award or Grant of Arms. Submitter does have an Award of Arms dated 8/27/2016; however, this is a household name so that may change things. It was ultimately decided to pass this up to Society because the submitter essentially wants 'Dauntless' and there may be another way to give the submitter what they want without creating the appearance of claiming rank or title. Dauntless also does appear as a word in Shakespeare:

Dauntless, OED

William Shakespeare • Mr. William Shakespeares comedies, histories & tragedies • 1st Folio, 1623 (1 vol.).

London, I. Iaggard and E. Blount
