Outlands LoI dated 2023-06-29 From the Office of Rampart Herald THL Khalidah bint Yahya'a (Nicole Riviezzo) [email protected] Unto the Sovereigns and members of the College of Arms of the Society, does Khalidah bint Yahya'a, Rampart Herald send her greetings. What follows is the June 2023 Letter of Intent for the Kingdom of the Outlands. I would like to all of the heralds who were kind enough to contribute to internal commentary on OSCAR. It is my intent to register this June the following items from the Outlands' College of Heralds.
1: Ástríðr Ylfva - New Name (KLoI)
(NP)
Submitter desires a feminine name.
Client requests authenticity. Sound most important. Language/Culture most important.
'Ástríðr' - Norse given name. Geirr Bassi Haraldsson. The Old Norse Name. Studia Marklandica I. Olney, MD: Markland Medieval Militia. 1977. (Appendix H No Copy)
'Ylfva' - Swedish Descriptive Byname. Wilhelmina Stalberg. Antechningar om svenska qvinnor. Stockholm, P.G. Berg. 1864. Pg. 203. (Documentation Attached)
Additional Documentation and thoughts by Orle:
Ástríðr: Lena Peterson's Nordiskt Runnamnslexikon has runic inscriptions with the feminine given name <Ástríðr>, and cross referencing thorse against the Rundata database dates those inscriptions from c.990 all the way to c.1050. E.H. Lind s.n. <Ástríðr> cols. 87-89 tells us that this name was common in Norway throughout the entire medieval period and was found in Iceland from the Settlement onwards. SMP s.n. <Astridh> has spellings in <Astrid> from the late 14th c. and <Astridh> into the 15th c.
Ylva: The Administrative Handbook (https://heraldry.sca.org/admin.html) states, my emphasis: "Documenting evidence must be included for all name elements, constructions, and patterns, as well as any non-standard armorial elements or practices. Such documentation must include references to specific pages and/or entries in the source material and translations must be provided for any sources not in English."
The cited book can more easily be found at http://runeberg.org/sqvinnor/ -- it's a 19th c. work with short entries on women in Swedish History. The spellings are modern to the era in which the work was written.
<Ingrid Ylva> was the mother of the very famous Birger Jarl. She was born sometime in the late 1100s and died in the mid 1200s.
<Ylva> is an Old Swedish (c.1300s and after) derivation from Old Norse <ylgr>, <ylgja> "she-wolf"; the related verb <ýla> is "to howl". See: Lexicon Poëticum Antiquæ Linguæ Septentrionalis p. 900 s.v. <ylgja>, <ylgr>, <ýla>. (Sveinbjörn Egilsson. Copenhagen: J. D. Qvist & Co. 1860. http://books.google.com/books...) and Lexica Poetica Antiquæ Linguæ Septentrionalia p. 632 s.v. <ylgr>, p. 668 s.v. <ýla> (Finnur Jónsson. Copenhagen: S. L. Møllers. 1931. http://www.septentrionalia.net/lex/index2.php...)
Such a byname follows the well-established pattern of animal names used as bynames, for ex.: <kraka> "crow"; <lambi> "lamb"; <Hafr-> "Billygoat-"; <hestr> "horse"; <hœngr> "salmon"; <spǫrr> "sparrow"; <galti> "boar", etc.
Date and Time: During the Viking Age, I'd expect something like <Ástríðr ylgja>. If we're talking about the 13th c. and later, we might see something more like <Astrid ylva>.

Additional Documentation by Ragged Staff & Crampette:
Hardouin is a French masculine given name found in the Family Search Records as the baptism of Hardouin Dolarsianne, 9 April 1645, Côtes-du-Nord, France. No batch number, but an image (Image #1) shows the name recorded twice in the item. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6FQN-SFJ4
Submitter would prefer the given name spelled Harduin, if that can be documented.
of Herstal is a locative byname. Herstal is recorded in Latin in the Toponymical Dictionary of Belgium, the Netherlands, Northern France and West Germany (before 1226) in an online database. https://bouwstoffen.kantl.be/tw/lemma/...
Hardouin is found in a book dated to 1622 on Google Books (Image #2) - https://www.google.com/books/edition/Histoire_g%C......
Juetta Copin notes the following: I think we can make a case for -uin and -ouin being interchangeable. Familysearch has many results for both Balduin and Baldouin in France.

4: Jorundr Sylfuson - New Device
OSCAR finds the name on the Outlands LoI of May 28, 2023 as submitted.
Per pale vert and sable, a polypus argent
Originally submitted on the April 2023 LoP (https://oscar.sca.org/index.php?...) as Per pale sable and vert, a polypus argent. Conflict was found but Palimpsest noted no conflict with the reversed field tincture so Kingdom pended the device on the May 2023 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2023-05-lop/2305-lor.html) to allow the submitter time to submit new art with the reversed tincture. The submitter also utilized a new polypus as commentors on the April 2023 LoP noted the original was 'kind of trian'.

de San Sebastián is a locative, "from S. Sebastian". Encyclopedia Britannica documents San Sebastián as the Spanish spelling in 1014. Accessed at: https://www.britannica.com/place/Donostia-San-Sebastian.
