Tidings from the previous month

Albion Herald has published the Drachenwald LoI dated 2019-Oct-30.

The following submissions were forwarded to Laurel:

  • Adeliza de Bello - New Name
  • Adeliza de Bello - New Device: Argent, an estoile and on a chief wavy azure a wolf courant Or.
  • Heiðr Olavsdottir - New Device: Vert, a goat statant contourny reguardant and a chief urdy argent.
  • Mikki Hurttala - New Name
  • Pähkinä, Hamlet of - Resub Name
  • Pähkinä, Hamlet of - New Badge: Gules, a hazelnut tree fructed between three billets Or.

The following submissions were returned for further work:

  • None.

1: Christine de Byzance -New Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in July of 2017, via Drachenwald.

Per chevron inverted rayonny Or and gules.

2: Hirwisalo, Hamlet of -New Name

No changes.

Hamlet is a designator used for entities that "fall somewhere between branches and households" in Drachenwald. Hirwisalo is a 'kylä' ("hamlet" or "village" in Finnish) recognized as such a group by Barony of Aarnimetsä.

According to CL of LoAR 04-2018 (

"Only Lochac and Drachenwald may submit names and badges for Hamlets. [...] Hamlet names are considered branch names for the purposes of the College of Arms. Hamlet is the designator and the substantive elements of the name must be appropriate for a place name. "Hamlet of" is considered neutral in language and time period."

Hirwisalo is a Finnish place name dated to 1336 in Keskiajan suomen kielen dokumentoitu sanasto ensiesiintymävuosineen by Mikko K. Heikkilä, s.v. hirvi.

Support: The seneschal of Aarnimetsä, the barony responsible for the hamlet of Hirwisalo, has provided the following as support for the submission:

A hamlet in the Barony of Aarnimetsä wishes to register their name Hirwisalo. As the seneschal of Aarnimetsä I vouch that the said area is a branch-like entity, 'kylä', recognized by Aarnimetsä. Their 'kylänvanhin', "hamlet elder", as well as the contact person for the submission is Lady Yrmegard of Hawkwood. To the best of my knowledge the people living in the hamlet support this name submission.

3: Mikael Carhu -Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in June of 1999, via Drachenwald.

Or, a chief urdy vert.

The device was previously returned in LoAR 1999-06:

"Mikael Carhu. Device. Vert, a base urdy Or.

This conflicts with the protected flag of Libya Vert. The base is a peripheral secondary charge, like a chief or bordure, it cannot be a primary charge, so its addition is not sufficient under X.1. to generate enough difference for registration."

This is a complete redesign.

4: Sigridh Gudmundsdotther -New Name & New Device

Per fess embattled Or semy of arrows sable, a point pointed Or.

Submitter desires a feminine name.
No major changes.
Language (Swedish) most important.
Culture (Sweden) most important.
Spelling (Wants the spelling "Sigridh") most important.

I would like a Swedish name from the 14th century.

A patronymic byname is a common medieval surname for women, -dotther can be added to the possessive form of the father's name to form the patronymic byname (Aryanhwy merch Catmael (Sara L. Friedemann), Swedish Feminine Given Names from SMP,, 23 October 2019).
