Atenveldt LoP dated 2019-11-01

ATENVELDT COLLEGE OF HERALDS

1 November 2019, A.S. LIV

LETTER OF PRESENTATION Kingdom of Atenveldt

Unto Their Royal Majesties Franbald and Dionysia; Baron Seamus MacDade, Aten Principal Herald; Heralds in the Atenveldt College of Heralds; and to All Whom These Presents Come,

Greetings of the New Year from Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy, Brickbat Herald and Parhelium Herald for the Kingdom of Atenveldt!

Please have commentary to me on the proposed submissions for the November Letter of Intent by 20 November 2019.

1: Courvis Douw -New Name & New Device

Per bend raguly between a raven and a wolf sejant contourny sinister paw raised sable.

Submitter desires a masculine name.
Sound most important.

John Courvis has a christening date of 12 April 1607 in Halstock, Dorset, England (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JW9T-K6N). In late period, English surnames often serve as individuals' given names. The client's legal given name is Corvis.

Douw is a surname in Black, p. 218, s.n. Dove, Dow, Dowe; Ede Dow held a land in "vico boreali," Edinburgh, 1366.

English and Early Modern Scots name are compatible language elements for registration (Appendix C: Regional Naming Groups and Their Mixes, http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html); the client also has a family association with Orabilis Douw, registered July 2017.

2: Elisif Eld Grimsdottir -New Name & New Device Change

Per bend sinister Or and gules, an ermine spot sable and a threaded needle bendwise sinister Or, a bordure compony sable and argent.

Old Item: Per pale indented lozengy sable and Or, and gules, a rod of Asclepius Or., to be released.
Submitter desires a feminine name.
Language most important.
Culture most important.

The client's currently-registered name is Elisabetta Malipiero (April 2002). If the new one is registered, release the old one.

Elisif is said to be an ON female name, along with a Swedish and Norwegian name, although they are dated in the 19th C (Nordic Names, https://www.nordicnames.de/wiki/Elisif). However, Ellisif (with a double -ll-) is found in the Viking Answer Lady website, "the Nordicized version of the Russian name Elisaveta, the daughter of Jaroslav who married Norwegian king Haraldr hardrada." (http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/ONWomensNames.shtml#)

Eld(r) is "fire" in ON (Viking Bynames found in the Landnámabók," Aryanhwy merch Catmael, http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/vikbynames.html).

Grimsdottir, "daughter of Grimr," is an accurate formation for an ON patronymic ("A Simple Guide to Creating Old Norse Names," Aryanhwy merch Catmael).

3: Elisif Eld Grimsdottir -New Badge

OSCAR is unable to find the name, either registered or submitted.

Per bend sinister Or and gules, an ermine spot sable and a threaded needle bendwise sinister Or, a bordure compony sable and argent.

Yes, the device and badge submissions are identical.

4: Gret Búrstlinin -New Badge

OSCAR thinks the name is registered as Gret B?rstlinin in July of 2012, via Atenveldt.

Per bend argent and Or two edelweiss blossoms and a bordure, all counterchanged.

We need an IAP to allow the Rule of Tincture to be violated. (OTOH, it is an attractive design.) Additionally, Beatrice Domenici della Campana's device change was registered December 2018 as Per fess argent and Or, two roses counterchanged. with excellent documentation for the her device; I am contacting her to see if it might be shared with us.

5: Ilaria la Volpe Della Scalla -New Name

Submitter desires a feminine name.
No major changes.
Meaning most important.

The name is Italian.

Ilaria: feminine form of Ilario. The male name is dated twice in 1511 in "Italian Masculine Given Names from 15th- and 16th-Century Viterbo," Sara Uckelman, www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/italian/viterbo.htm).

la Volpe: "the fox"

Della Scala: locative, "from the staircase,"Venetian Personal Names," Arval Benicoer and Talan Gwynek, https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/arval/venice14/.

6: Isabel Douw -New Name & New Device

Isabel Douw (BoA): NEW NAME and DEVICE Per chevron purpure and argent, two sea-unicorns respectant argent and a tree eradicated proper.

Isabel is a feminine given name found in "An Index to the 1523 Subsidy Roll for York and Ainsty, England," Karen Larsdatter (http://heraldry.sca.org/names/york16/index.htm).

7: Kunetil Guotman -New Name

Submitter desires a masculine name.
No major changes.
Language (German/Austrian) most important.

The name is German. Kunetil is a male given name dated to 1373 and found in "Medieval German Given Names from Silesia: Men's Names," by Talan Gwynek (https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/talan/bahlow/bahlowMasc.html). It is listed under Conrad.

Gu[o]tman is found in "German Names from Rottweil, Baden-Württemberg, 1441." Sara L. Uckelman (http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/german/rottweilsur.html). Hans Guotman has a christening day of 30 Aug 1608 in Evangelisch, Fellbach, Neckarkries, Wuerttberg (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NVH9-FXZ).

8: Lucius James -New Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in May of 2018, via Atenveldt.

Per pale sable and argent, a gorilla's head couped and a bordure charged with an ivy vine all counterchanged. .

9: Malin Vinyarsista -New Name & New Device

Argent, a tree eradicated sable, on a chief gules three skulls argent.

Submitter desires a feminine name.
Meaning (Finnish for Malin from the vinyards) most important.

The name is Finnish. Malin is a female given name, dated to 1556 as hustruu Mallin ("Vanhat nimityyppimme (Finnish Names)", Rouva Gertrud, htpp://heraldry.sca.org/names/FinnishNamesArticle.htm). It is also found in Svenske fornamn by Roland Otterbjörk, Almqvist and Wiksell 1966, dated to 1524 in Norway.

The byame is "from the vineyards," translating from English to Finnish; I couldn't find anything like this. Another Finnish option acceptable to the client is Viinitahoyen Sisar, which translates to "the sister from the vineyards."

Many thanks in advance for your time and consideration of these submissions.
