2: Bríán Hróbjartsson - New Device

OSCAR thinks the name is registered as Br??n Hr?bjartsson in June of 2013, via Atenveldt.

Azure, a wolf's head cabossed and on a chief argent three pairs of a chisel and a hammer in saltire sable.

The tools appear in the online Mistholme Pictorial Dictionary. The author suggests that the exact type of chisel should be mentioned in the blazon (this is a wood chisel). The author also blazons the other charge as a modern war-hammer (accepted charge), to distinguish it from a period war-hammer, with its clawed striking face.

3: Catalina Margherita fil Abraham - New Name

Submitter desires a feminine name.
No major changes.
Culture (none given) most important.
Meaning most important.
Spelling (keep Abraham as this spelling) most important.

Catalina is a female Italian given name ("Italian Renaissance Women's Names," Rhian Lyth of Blackmoor Vale, http://heraldry.sca.org/names/italian.html). Catalina is also found 46 times in "Spanish Names from the Late 15th Century" by Juliana de Luna (Julia Smith, julias@alumni.pitt.edu).

Margherita is a female Italian given name ("Italian Renaissance Women's Names," Rhian Lyth of Blackmoor Vale, http://heraldry.sca.org/names/italian.html). There is also the spelling Margarita, http://heraldry.sca.org/names/isabella/WomensGivenAlpha.html as a female Spanish given name.

fil Abraham means "daughter of Abraham" ("Jewish Naming Convention in Angevin England," Eleazar ha-Levi, http://heraldry.sca.org/names/jewish.html). fil is a patronymic byname used by men and women, and Abraham is a common name of this time period. The submitter's legal last name is Abraham, and she wishes to keep the name and spelling intact while working her SCA name around it.

Maridonna Benvenuti comments that "Boniac Abraham is found in "Jews in Catalonia: 1250 to 1400 - All Men's Complete Names" by Juliana de Luna (Julia Smith) http://heraldry.sca.org/names/catalanjews/CatalanJews-all-men.html "The "typical" Jewish naming pattern is a given name, followed by a patronymic name. In Hebrew, this takes the form of ben 'son of' for men, followed by the father's name. While this form is occasionally seen here, more frequently the given name is followed by the father's name without 'ben' or 'bat'(http://heraldry.sca.org/names/catalanjews/CatalanJews.html.)"

Juetta Copin further comments that Fil is a scribal abbreviation. Seraphina Delphino adds "If Fil is a scribal abbreviation, would submitter being willing to use filia? According to "On the Evolution of Jewish Names," Eleazar ha-Levi http://heraldry.sca.org/kwhss/2014/Eleazar_ha-Levi/On_the_Evolution_of_Jewish_Names.pdf): "In 13th and 14th century Spain, Jews used fijo de (son of) and filia or filla de (daughter of)...and Abraham can be documented as a masculine Jewish name in Spain, so Legal name allowance would not be needed."

It seems that Catalina Margarita Abraham would be acceptable, as might Catalina Margherita filia Abraham or Catalina Margherita filla de Abraham. (The latter ones mix Spanish and Italian elements, with their use of Margheria.)

According to SENA Appendix A, for Jewish names vernacular bynames often follow the Hebrew forms (so mostly patronymic), but are generally written following the standards for the local vernacular: both Spanish and Italian demonstrate double given names.

4: Der bFáil inghean Conail - New Name & New Device

Vert, a bellflower slipped and leaved and a tierce argent.

The name is Irish Gaelic. Der bFáil is a female Middle Irish Gaelic name, dated 929-1180 ("Index of Names in Irish Annals: Derbáil / Dearbháil," Mari Elspeth nic Bryan, http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Feminine/Derbail.shtml).

inghean is a particle denoting "daughter of." ("Quick and Easy Gaelic Names," 3rd Edition, Sharon Krossa, http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/#simplepatronymicbyname).

Conaill is the genitive form of the male Middle Irish Gaelic name Conall dated 904-1050 (Mari Elspeth nic Bryan, above). I think a terminal -l got lost along the way.

The bellflower family Campanulaceae is cosmopolitan to most areas of the world except for the Antarctic (https://www.britannica.com/plant/Campanulaceae).

5: Frij of Windale - New Name & New Device

Quarterly gules and sable, an elk statant counterchanged Or and argent.

Frij is a coined name, intended to be Old Norse; unfortunately, I find nothing like it in ON or other Scandanavian language. The client informs me that he is in the process of having his legal given name changed to Frij, but nothing of a legal nature has happened at this date. If necessary, a holding name can be assigned to him if his device submission is approved so that it can be registered (his current legal given name is Jason).

The branch-name for the Shire of Windale was registered November 1998.

7: Kokachin Qo'a - Resub Name & New Device

Per pale argent and sable, two skeletons arms raised counterchanged.

The client's original name submission Kidala Boskov, was returned by Laurel June 2017 for the use of two bynames; Kidala couldn't be found as a given name. This is a complete change.

Qo'a, "fair, beautiful," is a byname found in "Middle Mongol Grammar for SCA Names," Ursula Georges, http://yarntheory.net/ursulageorges/names/mongolgrammar.html#genitive; it is also found with a slight spelling variation as ghoa/guua ("Mongolian Naming Practices," Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy, http://heraldry.sca.org/names/mongolian_names_marta.html).

9: Qarakhan Monchuq - New Name Change

OSCAR NOTE: the old name was registered in January of 2005, via An Tir.

Old Item: Chinua Temur, to be released.
Submitter has no desire as to gender.
No major changes.

Qarakhan has been registered with a spelling variation Kharakhan by the College of Arms: Mongolian and Turkish names can interchange K/Kh/Q. This particular spelling is found in C.E. Bosworth's Notes on Some Turkish Names in Abu 'l-fadl Bayhaqï's Tārīkh-i Mas'ūdī. The client prefers the "Q" spelling, but if need be, she will accept either spelling.

Monchuq, alternately spelled Munjuk, Mundzuk, Mundzuq, are all acceptable to the client, although she prefers Monchuq. The name is also found in Bosworth, a leader of Kujet auxiliary troops and charged by Sultan Mas'ud to make an assassination attempt on the Shah, which failed. The name may translate to "bead (of clay)", "necklace of beads" or even "jewel."
