3: Eiríkr Gylðir Grímsson - New Name

No major changes.
Language (Old Norse for Eric the wolf son of Grimr) most important.
Culture most important.

Eiríkr: Geirr Bassi, p. 9, under Masculine Names says Eiríkr occurs 12 times.

gylðir: a Norse descriptive byname meaning "wolf" or "howler," gylðir

found in Geirr Bassi, p. 22 Capitalization based on April 2012 LoAR Cover Letter Norse Capitalization section (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2012/04/12-04cl.html). Lowercase is acceptable to submitter.

Grímsson: The name Grímr can be found in Bassi, p. 10. On Bassi, p. 17, we find the correct formation of the patronymic from [Grímr] is [Grímsson]. Use whichever form of "Grimsson" or "Grímsson" to comply with the "all accents or none" requirement.

The patronymic formation is shown in "A Simple Guide to Creating Old Norse Names" by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (Sara L. Uckelman) http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/sg-viking.html; where it is shown that a father's given name ending in -mr (Grímr) would generate the patronymic "Grímsson" for a male child, by dropping the "r" and adding "-sson."

SENA Appendix A lists options of: given+by, given+descriptive+pat, or given+pat+descriptive as patterns for Scandinavian names. Submitter prefers Given+Descriptive+Patronymic.

This is a resubmission from the July 2018 Laurel return of Mardoll Kettlingr Hakonardottir:

Precedent states that Mardǫll (here simplified as Mardoll) cannot be registered because it was a unique name used only by the goddess Freyja. On the November 2008 Letter of Acceptances and Returns, we returned the name Mardöll Vilhjálmsdóttir, explaining:

This is returned for using a unique, fictional name. The given name was documented, as Mardǫll, from Geirr Bassi, The Old Norse Name. Fause Losenge says of this entry:

Unfortunately, Geirr was a bit overenthusiastic when he included <Mardo,ll> in his pamphlet: E.H. Lind, Norsk-Isländska Dopnamn ock Fingerade Namn från Medeltiden (Uppsala & Leipzig: 1905-1915, sup. Oslo, Uppsala and Kobenhavn: 1931) s.n. <Mardo,ll> notes that this is a fictitious, invented name found in the Prose Edda. It's used in Chapter 35 of the section known as 'Gylfaginning' as an alternative name for the goddess Freyja. . . Besides references to Freyja Lind notes only a single reference to a <Mardo,ll Gríms dóttir>, who, he says, is probably fictional, a character invented by the composer of 'Brandkrossa þáttr'.

Lacking evidence that Mardǫll was used by real people in our period or that it was used in period literature as the name of a human woman, it is not registerable. [11/2008 LoAR, R-Middle]

No new data has come to light concerning this name. Unlike some names from the eddas and sagas, such as Dagný, we do not have evidence that the name Mardǫll began being used by real people in period. Accordingly, we have no grounds for overturning the November 2008 precedent and, for that reason, this name is returned.

9: Vigdis in Gylðir - New Name

Appears as both the name of a human woman in Landnámabók and as the name of one of the valkyries. In Laxdæla saga(c. 1245) Vígdís Hallsteinsdóttir is the wife of Víga-Hrappr("Killer-Hrappr"), while Vígdís Ingjaldsdóttir is the granddaughter of Óláfr feilan ("wolf-cub") and wife of Þórðr goddi.
