Outlands LoP dated 2014-06-13

Outlands College of Heralds

June 13, 2014 From the Office of the Castle Herald

Gauvain Eisenbein

castle@outlandsheralds.org

Unto the Outlands College of Heralds, our respected friends and colleagues who give freely of their time to provide commentary, and all others who come by these letters, on this auspicious Friday the 13th day of June, A.S. XLIX (2014 CE), does Lord Gauvain Eisenbein send greetings on behalf of Baron Randal Carrick, White Stag Principal Herald.

Here follows the Kingdom of the Outlands' Letter of Presentation for June 2014.

It would assist the Castle Herald greatly in the future if you would e-mail a copy of the documentation summary for name submissions along with the paper copies. It saves having to re-type everything again, and also cuts down on errors. Also, please be sure that you include dates of registration and return for armory for previously registered names and resubmissions of any kind. If Castle can't find where an item was returned, it will very likely be pended until the information is provided or payment is made for a new submission. Likewise, please provide URL's for your citations - it makes every thing better.

Anyone may comment upon the items found herein, and e-mail commentary to the herald's commentary list is encouraged. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Please have comments on items contained herein to Rampart Herald by July 15th, 2014, for the decision meeting scheduled for July 16th, 2014. (N.B. the time traveling required by meeting dates in the previous LoP caused a rather significant rip in the luminous ether, so the July meeting will cover both May and June submissions.) As a reminder, the College of Arms requests commentary on all items, including appeals.

[Amber] - Submitter's given name. Driver's license on file.

Per fess embattled vert and or, two needles in saltire argent threaded by a single thread Or and a chapeau reversedsable brimmed vert ermined argent

The submitter's previous device, Per fess embattled vert and Or, two needles in saltire argent, threaded Or, and a chapeau reversed sable brimmed vert ermined argent, was returned on the February 2014 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2014/02/14-02lar.html#Outlands_returns17) with the following: {This device is returned for not being reliably blazonable, a violation of SENA A1C which requires an emblazon to be describable in heraldic terms. The threaded needles here are depicted in such a fashion that the threads are more substantial than the needles; the appearance is more two ribbons in an unblazonable position maintaining two needles. As we cannot reliably blazon this, it cannot be registered.}

Note from submitting herald: On the 03/13 LoAR Laurel released the chapeau from being a reserved charge, except for limited colorations. The color pattern is not on the protected list.

Per bend sinister sable and gules, a bend sinister argent between and eye and a rose slipped and leaved bendwise sinister Or

There is precedent that the charge is not suitable, considering returns of designs using an "eye of Horus," as found in:

The Eye of Horus is an abstract symbol or combination of symbols whose meaning was not understood by Europeans in the SCA period. Unlike the Eye of Horus, the occasional word or letter found in medieval and Renaissance heraldry were part of the languages and symbolic iconography of Europe. Nor is this symbol a reasonable heraldic depiction of an eye; a heraldic eye is a solid charge where the Eye of Horus is depicted as a thin line. As such, this belongs to the category of artistic designs which are not compatible with heraldry. [Sebastian Blacke, R-Trimaris, Aug 2001]}
