4: Brandubh Dalrymple - New Badge

OSCAR finds the name on the Outlands LoI of November 22, 2013 as submitted.

(Fieldless) On a sun sable, an eye argent irised gules

Submitter has provided documentation for the design, scan included below.

Submitter's previous badge, (Fieldless) an eye argent, irised gules, issuing four gouttes de poix crosswise, was returned on the November 2013 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2013-10-lop/1311-lor.html) with the following:

{Returned for identifiability issues. Commentors noted that the eye did not look like an eye, a pointed ellipse at best, and that the gouttes looked more like a modified cross or a modfied mullet of four points. Overall, it was noted that this arrangement looked more like a modern motif rather than a period one.}

The above submission has images. To view them, see the URLs below:

5: Emm Macgregor - New Name

Submitter desires a feminine name.
Client requests authenticity for 16th century Scot.
Sound most important.

[Emm] - 'Index of Scots names found in Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue: Emm' Aryanhwy merch Catmael (http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/scots/dost/emm.html); 1 instance dated to 1584

[Macgregor] - 'Names of women mentioned in the Perth Guildry Book 1464-1598' Aryanhwy merch Catmael (http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/scots/perth.html); 1 instance dated to 1567

Additional Documentation provided by Green Anchor:

Emm in that spelling is also found dated to 1327 in "Feminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames" by Talan Gwynek, sn. Emma. -- http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/talan/reaney/reaney.cgi?Emma

6: Fergus Campbell - New Alternate Name

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in September of 2013, via the Outlands

Yuri Ivanov

[Yuri] - 'Foundation for Medieval Genealogy' (http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/RUSSIA,%20Rurik.htm#_Toc198014289)

{Note: Wickenden uses <lurii> or <lur'i> but BGN/PCGN/British Standard will get a <Yu-> spelling. Wickenden's Dictionary of Period Russian Names uses the Library of Congress transliteration system which renders Yuri as luri. The Revised English system gives the Yu- spelling and should be equally registrable. SENA Appendix D.}

[Ivanov] - 'Russian Personal Names: Name Frequency in the Novgorod Birch-Bark Letters Men's Names' Masha Gedilaghine Holl (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/predslava/bbl/men.html)

Additional Documentation and Support provided by Goutte d'Eau:

Name looks fine, although the webpage cited doesn't actually seem to have the personal name Yuri, just the town Yuriev. But it can be easily re-documented using Wickenden:

Wickenden, 2nd ed. sn. Iurii has:

Iur'i (Iur'i Kaleka). 1316.

and sn. Ioann:

Ivan (Ivan Fomin syn, governor). 1181-2.

Ivanov [from Ivan] (Prokhna Ivanov syn). Before 1147.

Assuming they are <Юрьн> and <Иван> respectively, then the desired transliteration via Revised English (http://heraldry.sca.org/names/paul/zpreface.html) gives:

<Iur'i Ivanov> ALA/LoC system, or

<Yuri Ivanov> Revised English system

13: Mathilde Bouret - New Name & New Device

Per bend gules and sable, three quatrefoils Or

Submitter desires a feminine name.
No major changes.

[Mathilde] - 'England, Derbyshire, Church of England Parish Registers, 1538-1910' lists Mathilde Pilsworth, buried 11 Nov 1637 (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KB65-CC4 : accessed 13 Jan 2014)

[Bouret] - 'France,Protestant Church Records, 1612-1906' lists Suzanne Bouret, baptized 28 1605. (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FG9Q-5R9 : accessed 12 Jan 2014)

Additional Documentation provided by Volk, Green Anchor, & Brunissende Dragonette:

Mathilde is also noted with 1 instance in the Laurel website article entitled, "Women's Names in the First Half of 16th Century Wales: Given Names" by Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn. See: http://heraldry.sca.org/names/welshfem16/given.html

Bouret is noted in the draft article, "Bynames in Medieval France" by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (Sara L. Uckelman, January 23, 2014), s.n. Bouret, p32, which dates the spelling 1306 Picardy. url: http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/french/frenchbynames.pdf

SENA in Appendix C notes that German name elements dating 1100-1600 can be mixed with French name elements dating 1100-1600. Thus the aforementioned Mathilde found as a German name element (name of daughter of a ladgrave of Hesse) dated 1489 and this French name element (Picardy) dated 1306 seems to be registerable.

Dauzat's entry has an unusual dated citation of 1357. He says it means "sorte de baquet", which my machine translator says means "left bucket"(!?).

"Mathilde" is easy enough to find in French http://books.google.com/books?id=idyuFh-47yoC&dq=Mathilde&hl=fr&pg=PA935#v=onepage&q=Mathilde&f=fals e

and here's a "brother Robert Bouret"

[Táethen] - 'Index of Names in Irish Annals: Sín / Táethen' Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Feminine/Sin.shtml)

[Cellach] - 'Index of Names in Irish Annals: Cellach / Ceallach' Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Cellach.shtml)

Submitter's previous name, Táethen Maculagh, was returned on the January 2014 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2013-12-lop/1401-lor.html) with the following: {Name returned because the two name elements have a 750 year gap and one is Irish, the other is Scots.}

Originally submitted as <Táethen mac Cellach> but agreed to change <mac> to <ingen> based on the commentary on the ILoI.

It is a unicornate horse which is not registerable. The "unicorn" is also in an unblazonable posture.}

This item was on the 07-2014 LoAR

16: Þorrun inn Viðforla - New Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in September of 2013, via the Outlands

Submitter's previous device, Vert chaussé, a valknot argent, was returned on the June 2013 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2013-05-lop/1306-lor.html) with the following: {This conflicts with Halvdan Stormulv (reg. 09/1993 via Ansteorra), "Azure, a valknut argent." The only difference is the field. (Chause is a field and not a charge)}

Thus ends the April 2014 Letter of Intent.
