Outlands LoP dated 2014-04-17

Outlands College of Heralds

April 15, 2014 From the Office of the Castle Herald

Gauvain Eisenbein

castle@outlandsheralds.org

Unto the Outlands College of Heralds, our respected friends and colleagues who give freely of their time to provide commentary, and all others who come by these letters, on this 16th day of April, A.S. XLVIII (2014 CE), does Gauvain Eisenbein send greetings on behalf of Baron Randal Carrick, White Stag Principal Herald.

Here follows the Kingdom of the Outlands' Letter of Presentation for March 2014. As a consequence of steeper than expected learning curves and cryptosporidium acquired at Gulf Wars, this letter is rather delayed. I apologize for the short fuse on this one and will be catching up over the next month of two.

It would assist Castle Herald greatly in the future if you would e-mail a copy of the documentation summary for name submissions along with the paper copies. It saves having to re-type everything again, and also cuts down on errors. Also, please be sure that you include dates of registration and return for armory for previously registered names and resubmissions of any kind. If Castle can't find where an item was returned, it will very likely be pended until the information is provided or payment is made for a new submission.

Anyone may comment upon the items found herein, and e-mail commentary to the herald's commentary list is encouraged. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Please have comments on items contained herein to Rampart Herald by April 22nd, 2014, for the decision meeting scheduled for April 23rd, 2014. As a reminder, the College of Arms requests commentary on all items, including appeals.

{Returned for identifiability issues. Commentors noted that the eye did not look like an eye, a pointed ellipse at best, and that the gouttes looked more like a modified cross or a modfied mullet of four points. Overall, it was noted that this arrangement looked more like a modern motif rather than a period one. }

Language (13th century Mongol) most important.
Culture most important.

[Suretai] - 'On the Documentation and Construction of Period Mongolian Names' Baras-aghur Naran (http://heraldry.sca.org/names/mongol.html) " The n+d pattern provides several names with one root. Examples of this are the Mongol word for iron is 'temur'. From this root word come the names Temur, Temujin, Temuge, Temuder, and Temulun. Note the dropping of the final consonant before the addition of the grammatical inflection. Grammatical inflections sometimes have a specific meaning, but do not stand on their own.

The suffix -jin means "of". Hence the literal meaning of Temujin is "of iron". This suffix is still used today to create patronymics. Another suffix which carries a specific meaning is -tai, which can be spelled -dai, -dei, -tai, or -tei, all of which show possession. An example is Chagatai, which is constructed from the root word Chagan, which means white, and the suffix -tai. The overall meaning of the name is "he who is white.""

Suren+Tai=Suretai (he who is majestic)
