8: Varukh syn Iarygin - New Device
OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in August of 2012, via Gleann Abhann
Per bend sinister argent and vert, four eel-forks in cross, boses conjoined, counterchanged
The submitter received help from Gunnvor Orle, who suggested a UK based 16th Century eel-spear digitzed here: http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/Stars/Heraldry_SVG_Images/Wargear.htm
The submitter writes: "This charge can be found online as eel-fork, eel-spear, or eel-gleave. There is an eel-spear at the Museum of London."
An extant 16th Century "eel spear" for sale can be found here: http://www.antiqueoakfurniture.co.uk/view_details.asp?prod_id=56
Another medieval eel-spear from the Museum of London can be viewed here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/maineexile/5645963822/
Gunnvor Orle offered the following commentary -
"Parker says (http://karlwilcox.com/parker/?page_id=1401):
Eel-spear: a kind of fork (fig. 1) used in taking eels; is represented on one or two coats of arms, while a charge in the bearings of the company of SOAPMAKERS, called an eel-spear, is represented as in the second figure. ...The ordinary position of the charge is with the points downwards.
■Sable, a chevron between three eel-spears, points downwards, argent -- STRATELE, or STRATLEY.
■Argent, three eelpicks sable -- WORTHINGTON, Lancashire.
■Azure, a dolphin naiant between three eel-spears or -- Company of SOAPMAKERS(Inc. 1638.)
SENA A.2.B.2.a. (http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#A2B2a) discusses the use of tools known in period to Europeans as charges. As Parker shows, there was already some variation in armorial depictions of eel-spears. Some are pretty harpoon- or trident-like, others more suited to catching slender slimy eels by stabbing a tool down against the river or creek bottom. The depiction submitted is quite close to the Museum of London example, so it should be registrable."
