Outlands LoP dated 2012-11-08

Outlands College of Heralds

November 8, 2012 From the Office of the Castle Herald

Sayyidah Khalidah bint Yahya'a

castle@outlandsheralds.org

Unto the Outlands College of Heralds, our respected friends and colleagues who give freely of their time to provide commentary, and all others who come by these letters, on this 8th day of November, A.S. XLVII (2012 CE), does Sayyidah Khalidah bint Yahya'a send greetings on behalf of Mistress Fiachra ni Ciardhubhain, White Stag Principal Herald. It would assist Castle Herald greatly in the future if you would e-mail a copy of the documentation summary for name submissions along with the paper copies. It saves having to re-type everything again. Also, please be sure that you include dates of registration and return for armory for previously registered names and resubmissions of any kind. If Castle can't find where an item was returned, it may be pended until the information is provided or payment is made for a new submission.

Here follows the Kingdom of the Outlands' Letter of Presentation for November 2012. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Errors found herein are my sole responsibility. Anyone may comment upon the items found herein, and e-mail commentary to the herald's commentary list is encouraged. Please have comments on items contained herein to Rampart Herald by December 15, 2012, for the decision meeting tentatively scheduled for December 19, 2012. As a reminder, the College of Arms requests commentary on all items, including appeals.

1: Alamanda de la Roca -Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in July of 2010, via the Outlands

Per chevron azure and argent two mullets of eight points argent and a salamander passant regardant sable enflamed proper

Submitter's previous device, Per chevron azure and argent, three mullets of eight point one and two argent and a salamander rampant sable, was returned on the April 2012 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2012-03-lop/1204-lor.html) with the following:

{Return for re-draw. This device is not on the standard shield shape from the approved forms, so it makes it hard to tell, but the line of division is way too low on the field. (Using the guides on the standard form, the chevron should have as much of the point above the horizontal marks as it has below at the sides). Further, the mullets are too small to really be considered co-primary. Finally, the charge at the bottom was not readily identified as a salamander, being described as the Geico Gecko or a ferret. If this is to be a heraldic salamander it needs flames. If it is to be a natural salamander it needs to either be tergiant or drawn very carefully, with appropriate detailing, in order to allow the viewer to distinguish it from a weasel or ferret.}

Submitter's previous device, Per chevron azure and argent two mullets of eight points argent and a salamander rampant sable enflamed proper, was returned on the September 2012 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2012-08-lop/1209-lor.html) with the following:

{Returned for redraw. This is not a proper rendition of flames proper. Flames proper are alternating tongues of gules and Or. Flames Or fimbriated gules (which is the closest to what this is) have been disallowed for decades now.  Acceptable images of an heraldic salamander enflamed can be seen here: https://oscar.sca.org/cImages/54/2012-08-09/14-44-16_Salamander.jpg and here: https://oscar.sca.org/cImages/520/2012-08-09/19-16-47_Alamanda%20de%20la%20Roca2_Color.jpg }

Submitter has redrawn the device and provided image documentation for the salamander and flame style used.

6: Lingorm gympe Eykr -Resub Name & Resub Device

Argent, a wingless seadragon erect to sinister and in chief three thistles proper

Submitter desires a masculine name.
Sound most important.

Submitter's previous name, Lingormr gympe inn eyke, was returned on the December 2007 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2007/12/07-12lar.html) with the following:

{The grammar of this name is incorrect. The byname ekyr is documented as a byname meaning "horse, beast of burden", in other words it is a noun used as a byname. The element inn, however, when found in bynames, is only used with weak-form adjectives. We would drop the element inn, but the submitter will not allow major changes such as dropping an element. Therefore, we are forced to return this name.}

Consulting Herald: Angus Reid MacFarlane

Submitter's previous device, Or, a dragon sinister purpure maintaining in each forepaw an axe sable hafted proper, in base a drakkar, and in canton the constellation Ursa Minor sable, was returned on the August 2007 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2007-07-lop/0708-lor.html) with the following:

{Commenters indicate that there are several issues with the device. Laurel precedent forbids the use of constellations within SCA armory, and was most recently affirmed in September 2000: [in chevron five compass stars elongated palewise] To quote Clarion: "It is standard SCA and mundane practice to put charges 'in {ordinary}.'" Thus, this does not fall afoul of the ban against charges in arch, nor that forbidding constellations. [Johann von Sternberg, 09/00, A-Ansteorra] Commeters also indicate that the dragon is wingless and not in a standard heraldic posture, both generating problems with non-period style as well as reproducibility. Finally sails of ships were used in armory to display badges that the bearer was entitled to. This requires sails to be checked for conflict independently. This sail conflicts with the following: United States - December of 1994 (via Laurel) - Argent, six palets gules and a chief azure. 1 CD for removal of the chief. Device returned for Laurel precedent (use of constellations), violation of Rfs VII.7.b (reproducibility of dragon), and conflict of sail armory.}
