This item was on the 08-2012 LoAR

1: Bárekr úlfheðinn - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in July of 2011, via the Outlands

Per fess sable and Or, a demi-sun issuant from chief and a flame issuant from base counterchanged

Submitter's name was registered on the July 2011 LoAR via the Outlands (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2011/07/11-07lar.html)

Submitter's previous device, Per fess urdy sable and argent, was returned on the July 2011 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2011/07/11-07lar.html) for the following: for the following:

{This device is returned for conflict with the badge of Kane Greymane, Per fess embattled sable and Or, masoned sable. There is one CD per X.4.a for change of half the field tincture, but we grant no difference between urdy and embattled. This device is also a conflict with the device of Kirstin of Hoschar, Per fess embattled of three battles sevenfold grady, Or and sable. There is one CD per X.4.a for the change of field tincture, but we grant no difference between urdy and embattled grady. If the submitter wishes to use urdy in the future, please draw the division much deeper and bolder, with fewer 'bumps'.}

Submitter has completely changed the device. No conflicts found.

2: Eric Litefoote of Studley - New Name

Submitter desires a masculine name.
No major changes.
Client requests authenticity for 16th Century English.
Sound (locative is most important) most important.

Eric] - Submitter's mundane name, provided a copy of his Driver's License

[Litefoote] - `16th Century Gloucestershire Names' by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/english/late16.html)

[Studley] - Town of Studley, Warwickshire. (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=7580304&queryType=1&re sultcount=9), (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=57007),

(http://www.domesdaymaps.com/maps/English%20Maps/Warwicscire.htm)

[Given Name+Surname+Locative] - `Naming Practices in 16th Century Gloucestershire: Use of More than One Byname or Surname' by Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada (http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/GlocNamePractices/MultipleBynames.shtml#TrueLocatives)

Internal commenters noted that this spelling of Eric was not documentable to period, and offered a number of alternate spellings to meet the authenticity request. The user was contacted and given his options, and indicated he would prefer to follow the mundane name allowance to retain the spelling Eric rather than go for true authenticity.

3: Giovanni da Lucca - New Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in December of 2003, via the Outlands

Per saltire wavy azure and argent

This submission is to be associated with Odd Ulfsson

Submitter's name was registered on the December 2003 LoAR via the Outlands (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2003/12/03-12lar.html).

Submitter's alternate name, Odd Ulfsson, was registered on the July 2010 LoAR via the Outlands (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2010/07/10-07lar.html).

Previous badge, Per Saltire Argent and Azure, was returned on the April 2010 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2010-03-lop/1004-lor.html) stating the following:

{RETURNED for conflict: Liam of the Barque, Badge (August 1979), Per saltire argent and purpure; Ælfthryth il, Device (July 2004 via An Tir), Per saltire sable and azure.  In each case, there is 1 CD by X.4.a.ii but that's all. Note that X.4.a.ii.b requires that they share no tinctures in common. (Rampart Note:  I believe the proposed rules changes, if they are approved, would change this requirement so that changing half the tincture of the field would be sufficient to clear the conflict.)}

Badge resubmission form was submitted under the alternate name not the submitter's primary name.

Correction (2012-Jun-20 16:06:23): This is a badge resubmission.

{This device is returned for redraw, for violating section VII.7.a of the Rules for Submissions which requires that "Elements must be recognizable solely from their appearance." The engrailing on the base here is too shallow and has too many repeats to be distinct at any distance. If the submission was redrawn with fewer and deeper engrailings, it would be registerable.}

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in February of 2012, via the Outlands

Per chevron azure and argent, two viols in saltire Or and a tulip gules slipped and leaved vert

Submitter's name was registered on the February 2012 LoAR via the Outlands (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2012/02/12-02lar.html).

Submitter's previous device, Per chevron azure and argent, two viols Or, affronte with necks in saltire and in a base a tulip gules slipped and leaved vert, was returned on the November 2011 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2011-10-lop/1111-lor.html) stating the following:

{This device must be Returned for a redraw.  Per the precedent on the May 2011 LoAR Cover Letter (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2011/05/11-05cl.html), a properly drawn chevron must be centered vertically on the per fess line of division on the shield.  As much of the chevron has to be above this line as there is below it.  In this case, the line of division is entirely below the centerline of the field.  At the same time, this is too large to be a base pointed.}

Submitter has re-drawn the line of division to address the issue

Correction (2012-Jun-20 16:06:56): This is a device resubmission.

{RETURN for conflict with Miles Fitzhubert, reg. 11/94 via An Tir: "Per chevron argent and vert, three roses and a bordure counterchanged".  No difference for dogwood vs roses. Note also: the dogwood flowers as drawn are American dogwood flowers; the European version is quite different.}

Under the new Standards for evaluation, this should be clear of Leslie the Brown; June of 1986 (via Ansteorra): Vert, on a bend sinister argent a Hermit Thrush close proper. [Hylocichla guttata], with differences for type and number of tertiary charges

9: Ríoghán Mac an Ghobhann mhic Dubhghall Ui Shínaigh - New Name

Submitter desires a masculine name.
Client requests authenticity for 12th-15th Century Irish.
Sound (Irish Gaelic for Ryan MacGowan) most important.
Meaning (Irish Gaelic for Ryan MacGowan) most important.

Submitter's previous name, Rioghan mac an Ghabhan, was returned on the April 2011 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2011-03-lop/1104-lor.html) stating the following:

{There is insufficient documentation for the name.  Please provide source citations showing a dated spelling of each name element.}

Submitter provided 5 pages of documentation summary in the original Irish, which local commenters did not find dated spellings in. However, additional documentation was provided by

Aryanhwy merch Catmael at 2012-04-18 03:20:10

Sharon L. krossa, "Quick & Easy Gaelic Names" (http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/)

<Ríoghán> is an EMIr form of the name <Rígán>, which is dated to 844 and 846 in Mari's annals index; <Rígán> is the OIr form. Lacking evidence that <Rígán> was used in the EMIr period, <Ríoghán> is not registerable.

The first byname is discussed on the 01/2007 LoAR:

Submitted as Ruadh mac Gavin mec Dhomhnuill, as submitted, this name has several problems each of which is cause for return...Luckily, putting the patronymic name phrase into an all Gaelic form solves both the second and third problem. The name that is written MacGavin in Scots is mac an Gobhann in Early Modern Irish Gaelic. This spelling appears in the Annals of the Four Masters in entries for 1341 and 1425. The meaning is "son of the smith" rather than "son of the man named Gavin", but the sound is nearly identical.

Note that <Gobhann> should not be lenited. <mac an Gobhann> is an EMIr form; combining it with OIr <Rígán> is a SFPP, and there is a second SFPP for the temporal disparity of greater than 300 years.

Following <mhic>, <Dubhghall> needs to be in the genitive case and, per "Quick & Easy", lenited, i.e., <Dhubhghaill>. <mhic Dhubhghaill> is an EMIr form; the appropriate OIr form would be <meic Dubgaill> (lenition of <D> was not written in O/MIr orthography).

<Shínaigh> appears to be a hybrid O/MIr and EMIr form. The O/MIr is <Sinach>, gen. <Sinaig>, and I would expect on the basis of this for the EMIr forms to be <Sionach>, gen. <Sionaigh>. I don't see any support for the accent. Mari's annals index has examples of <Sinach> between 719 and 1127. Lacking evidence that the clan byname based on this element was used in the EMIr period, an EMIr form is not registerable. A wholly O/MIr form would be <ui Sinaig>.

The closest name to the submitted form that I see as being registerable is <Rígán mac Dubgaill ui Sinaig> 'Rígán son of Dubgall of the O Sinaig clan'.

Note that <Rígán>/<Ríoghán> is not the Gaelic form of <Ryan>. The Gaelic form of <Ryan> is <Ríán>, which Mari has in 895, 976, 988, 1015, and 1016. This is a Middle Irish form. It could be used instead of <Rígán> in the above name, but it still cannot be combined with <mac an Gobhann> without incurring two SFPPs.

based on this commentary, submitter provided that "i want To keep the Rian Mac an Ghabhan the rest can go away". if it is possible to keep more of the submitted name, he would prefer to do so, but these elements are most important to him.

Correction (2012-Jun-20 16:06:16): This is a name resubmission.
