Meridies LoI dated 2017-06-30

Unto Emma, Laurel Principal, Alys Pelican, Cormac, Wreath, and all the College of Arms does Carlos, Pennon of the Glorious Kingdom of Meridies, on behalf of Mistress Flannait inghean uí hEighnigh, Beacon, and the Illustrious Meridian College of Heralds, send most humble and respectful greetings.

Please note all arms were given a conflict check at decision meeting.

A note from Pennon: This month's letter is very large - 51 total items. However, there are only 30 actual submission items on it; the other 21 items are purely administrative, with the vast majority pertaining to the transfer of baronial order names from the Kingdom to the Barony of Glaedenfeld.

1: Ædan Iohannes - New Device Change

OSCAR finds the name on the Meridies LoI of September 30, 2015 as submitted.

Gyronny azure and argent, a plate within a bordure counterchanged

Old Item: Per pale and per chevron azure and argent, in chief two crosses fleury fitchy within a bordure gyronny argent and azure, to be released.

Previous submission, Gyronny azure and argent, a bordure gyronny counterchanged, was returned by Kingdom in October 2016.

Must be returned for further work. This device conflicts with: Anson Gleowyn - The following device associated with this name was registered in September of 1990 (via the East): Gyronny azure and argent, a bordure semy of roundels counterchanged.

There is only one DC for the removal of the roundels. Commenters suggested adding a complex line of division or receiving a Letter of Permission to Conflict from the above gentle.

*****Submitted as Gyronny azure and argent, in fess point a plate within a bordure gyronny counterchanged. In fess point was removed due that the plate is center of the device which would be its default position.

Some worried about the contrast between the plate and the field. citing a pree SENA precedence

"Commentary raised the issue of whether or not charges can share a tincture with a multiply-divided field. While there are several precedents allowing multiply-divided ordinaries to share a tincture with a single-tinctured field, there are no precedents addressing the reverse. Ordinaries, generally having simple outlines, are far easier to identify than other charges when sharing a tincture with the field. Therefore, as long as identifiability is maintained, we will register single-tinctured ordinaries sharing tincture with a multiply-divided field, and multiply-divided ordinaries sharing tincture with a single-tinctured field." [Philipp Hartrat - Nov 2011 via Atlantia]

and

http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#A3B1, very near the end, as "A charge may only share a tincture with the field when both the charge and the field maintain identifiability."

a redraw was requested and approved by submitter at the decision meeting commenters believed that by enlarging the plate to be a more heraldic proportionate that it may have relived the contrast issue

This device is returned for conflict with the device of Morgaina Sarai la Foncée: Sable, a peacock, tail spread, maintaining in its beak a lotus with seed pod argent, slipped and leaved vert. The field is identical, the birds are in similar posture. There is only one DC for changing the type of held charge. The difference in location of the held charge does not bring an additional DC.

Mccauley - Surname, found via FamilySearch.org. "John Mccauley", marriage, dated 04 June 1649 in Kirkmichael, Ayr, Scotland, Batch M11600-2. Intended to be used as an inherited name, rather than a male-form patronymic, as is allowed for late period Irish and Scottish names. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XT2Z-T54

*****Submitter requested if documentation for Mac Amhlaoibh to make the name more period could be found to have the sur name changed to that

*****submitted as a dexter hand the hand on the emblazon is actually a sinister hand and was changed above.

some commenters felt the chevron might be too low while some thought is is a forced position due to the lions for identifiable commenters suggested an artist note of either shrinking the lions of a change of angle for the chevron

another issue some question was if the red and might be presumption of the red hand of ulster due to the fact it uses both a dexter or sinister hand

22: Heather Ingean Ui Briain - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name on the Meridies LoI of September 30, 2016 as submitted.

Per fess wavy purpure and azure, three natural dolphins naiant one-and-two and an escallop argent.

Previous submission, Per bend ermine and azure, three natural dolphins naiant proper, was returned by Laurel in December 2016.

This device is returned for conflict with the device of Stefan von Baden: Vert, three dolphins naiant argent. There is one DC for the changes to the field, but there is no DC for the change in arrangement, as the position of the dolphin in this device is forced (grey being effectively argent cannot be on an ermine field). There is also no DC for the difference between natural dolphin vs heraldic dolphin.

On redesign, please advise the submitter to use a lighter shade of grey. Proper creatures must still have acceptable contrast with the field. The grey used in this submission bordered on too dark to be used on azure.

*****An artist note was suggested to use a beefier fess wavy to help with the contrast

Correction to Device (2017-Jul-14 20:07:58): after some awesome education i have updated the form to have the proposed emblazon that was as stated submitted by the submitter please use that emblazon for this submission

24: Isabella de Boyce - Resub Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in June of 1992, via the East.

Azure ermined Or, a mustard flower argent seeded and a bordure embattled Or.

Previous submission, Azure, a mustard flower argent between four ermine spots, a bordure embattled Or, was returned by Laurel in January 2017.

Must be returned for further work. This badge is returned for redraw. Because of the small number of embattlements and odd cutout of the corner, the bordure is not identifiable.

Blazoned on the Letter of Intent as "quatrefoil", the blazon is not a correct description of the flower used. In order to allow reproducibility, we have reblazoned it as a "mustard flower". Additionally, the low number of ermine spots did not allow us to blazon this as an ermine field and we have reblazoned the number and position of the ermine spots accordingly.

*****Submitted as a quatrefoil the charge is actually a mustard flower and is seeded. the blazon was changed to the correct charge

25: Katelina de Chateleia - New Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in July of 2016, via Meridies.

Previous submission, Per fess vert and argent, a natural lily argent slipped and leaved vert, was returned by Kingdom in April 2017.

Must be returned for further work. Submitted withdrew resubmission due to it not resolving the issues of the previous resubmission.

*****Submitted as Per pale sable and Or, on a pall of vines vert a rose argent. commenters felt that adding that it is two grape vines entwined better described the emblazon and was added to the above

26: Marco di Giuhanni - New Name & New Device

Uckelman (Aryanhwy merch Catmael). Three instances listed with this spelling, dated 1486 and 1522. http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/italian/viterbo.html

*****Submitted as Per chevron inverted gules and sable, a polypus and on a chief embattled argent a rapier fesswise sable. commenteres pointed out the the sword was not in the default position of point to dexter and add the word reversed to denote its orientation

27: Marcus Roland - New Name & New Device

Additionally, both the charge of a non-eagle bird displayed and triskeles of spirals are a Step from Period Practice (SFPP). Only one SFPP is allowed on a piece of armory.

******Submitted as Azure, an owl argent sustaining in its talons a fleam Or and a chief dancetty fleury at the points argent. Commenters felt the owl and fleam were too close in size and are co primaries and the chief being one sided can not be dancetty the blazon was changed to above to reflect these concrens

43: Stella di Silvestri - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in June of 2016, via Meridies.

Per chevron azure and sable, a mullet of seven points Or and a bordure argent.

Must be returned for further work. Commenters could not match the blazon with the emblazon so that it may be reproduced because the star cuts through line of the lozenges blurring the two charges together. Commenters suggested drawing the star smaller so that the points do not break the line of the annulo.
