Nowak - Polish surname found in "Nazwiska Polaków" by Kazimierz Rymut, pg 197, s.n. Nowy lists several forms of <Nowy> to include <Nowak> dated 1335. "<Nowak> 1335 (od nowak 'czlowiek nowy, przybysz')" -- "the smith, new man, newcomer". Hard copy attached.

SENA Appendix C supports combining German and Polish name elements. These elements are less than 300 years apart.
