Atlantia LoI dated 2006-10-29 29 October, 2006
Unto Laurel, the Laurel staff and the College of Arms, greetings from Alisoun MacCoul of Elphane, writing as Golden Dolphin Herald!
Herewith does the College of Heralds of Atlantia submit the following items for consideration for registration by the College of Arms of the Society:
|
This item was on the 02-2007 LoAR
1: Aislinn Blackburn - New Name & New Device
Per pale rayonny azure and Or, a mare rampant argent and a cat rampant contourny sable, gorged gules.
No major changes. Sound (Blackburn) most important. Meaning (spelling "Blackburn") most important.
Aislinn was been ruled Society-compatible in August, 2000, a ruling that has been restated several times since. This spelling of the byname was documented by the Pennsic Consult Table from the index to Hitching and Hitching's References to English Surnames in 1601 and 1602. They also noted Bardsley's Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames which shows the spelling Blackburne from 1593 (p. 106). Blackburn also appears as a header form in Black (Surnames of Scotland, s.n. Blackburn) who notes Willelmus de Blakeburne from 1243, William de Blakburne from 1394 and Archimbald Blakburne from 1550. It is also the registered Society surname of her mundane husband, Alleyne Blackburn, who has granted her explicit permission to conflict with his name should the overall sound of the two names be considered too close for registration otherwise.

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in April of 1981, via Atlantia.
Award of the Alcyon
No major changes.
Alcyon is a classical and medieval name for the bird now more generally known as a kingfisher. This meaning is shown in period with this spelling from the sixteenth century (Oxford English Dictionary, s. v. halcyon). Parker (Glossary of Terms Used in Heraldry, s. v. alcyon) notes this bird appearing in mundane armory so this adheres to the pattern of order names derived from heraldic charges. The title of Alcyon Herald was at one time registered to the Kingdom of Atlantia, but was released in March, 1989. This award was created to recognize youth achievement in the arts and sciences.

12: Elizabet de Roslyne - Resub Name
Submitter desires a feminine name.
Client requests authenticity for fifteenth century Scotland.
Her submission of Elizabet Sinclair of Rosslyn was returned by Laurel in June, 2006, since the Laurel staff felt that the use of the locative Rosslyn with the surname Sinclair was presumptuous. The given name is documented in this spelling from the name of Elizabet Hangetsyde dated to 1567 by Black (Surnames of Scotland, s.n. Handasyde). Black (op. cit., s. n. Roslin) notes that the surname is from Roslin or Rosslyn in the parish of Lasswade, Midlothian, the old name of which was Rosclyn and cites Roger de Rosclyn from the first half of the thirteenth century, Henry de Roskelyn from 1261 and Sir Thomas of Roslyne who was in the service of Edward I.

13: Geoffrey de la Beche - New Device Change
OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in December of 2004, via the West.
Per pale azure and gules, on a pile Or a beech tree proper.
Old Item: Per pale azure and gules, on a pile Or a cyress tree proper., to be released.
His name was registered in December, 2004. His current device was submitted with an identical blazon but the tree was modified by the Laurel staff when it was registered in November, 2005, to a cypress tree with the comment "Blazoned on the LoI as a beech tree, the elongated and pointed shape makes this a cypress tree, not a beech tree. As the emblazon, not the blazon, is registered, this has been reblazoned as a cypress tree." As the submitter felt the point of having the tree on his armory was the representational cant, he wished to appeal this. However, indications were that any submission with the same tree would have the same result. Therefore, the submitter opted to change the tree and requested that we find what would be acceptable to the Laurel Office as a beech tree. The Laurel staff have been kind enough to send us copies of emblazon sheets for previous registrations of a beech tree. The beech tree used here derives from that in the arms of Eadwine be Bocce Sele ("Or, a beech tree eradicated proper and on a chief azure a pair of gauntlets clasped Or and argent.") which was the defining instance of a beech tree in Society armory.

18: Samuel Calvert of Gidiehall and Miriam Calvert of Gidiehall - New Badge
OSCAR finds the name (Samuel Calvert of Gidiehall) registered exactly as it appears in September of 2006, via Atlantia. OSCAR finds the name (Miriam Calvert of Gidiehall) registered exactly as it appears in September of 2006, via Atlantia.
(Fieldless) A cow rampant vert.
The names Samuel Calvert of Gidiehall Honiburn and Miriam Calvert of Gidiehall Honiburn were registered in April, 2003. The change of name to the forms of both names shown above appeared on the Atlantian Letter of Intent of May, 2006. There was some discussion as to whether the charge looked more like the typical bull, particularly in the depiction of the genitalia. (The blazon derives from the primary charge common to both their devices.) For those who wish to make a comparison, their devices as registered by Laurel in May, 2004, may be found at herald.atlantia.sca.org/submissions/2004/May_2004_Laurel_Results.pdf.

19: Sian verch Gwilim ap Lewelin - New Name & New Device
Azure, a tree blasted and eradicated Or, on a chief argent three pheons sable.
Submitter has no desire as to gender.
Language (presumably Welsh though this is not specified) most important. Culture (presumably Welsh though this is not specified) most important.
The given name was submitted as Siân and documented from a mention of Sian verch Iarll Somersed in the Cronicl Hywel ap Syr Mathew from the Peniarth manuscript dated to 1568 cited from the web at people.pwf.cam.ac.uk/dwew2/hcwl/chsm/chsm_dipl.htm. Since that source does not show the marking over the final vowel in the given name and we had no clear evidence for its use in period Welsh, though it is fairly standard in modern Welsh, we have dropped the marking. Both Gwilim and Lewelin appear as documentary forms in Jones' "Simple Guide to Constructing 13th Century Welsh Names" at www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/welsh13.html.
