Northshield LoI dated 2023-08-31

Northshield LoI dated 2023-08-31

Greetings unto Emma Laurel; Elizabetta Pelican; Iago Wreath; and all honored members of the College of Arms, greetings from Keythong. A great appreciation and thank you is given to all that left the valuable commentary on the internal letter from which this missive is created. Your advice and contributions made this letter possible.

What follows is the August 2023 Letter of Intent from the Kingdom of Northshield. It is our intent to see the registration of these items.

1: Annetje van Leuven and Hieronymus van Gent - New Badge Change (KLoI)

OSCAR finds the name (Annetje van Leuven) registered exactly as it appears in December of 2017, via Northshield.
OSCAR finds the name (Hieronymus van Gent) registered exactly as it appears in December of 2017, via Northshield.

Gules, a saltire of four ragged staves argent between four furisons flats to centre Or

Old Item: Gules, in saltire two ragged staves argent between four furisons flats to center Or., to be released.

No blazon was entered with the submission. Therefore, one was selected from the suggested blazon options presented in Internal Commentary.

Question was raised in commentary as to if the submitters were actually releasing the old emblazon, registering a new one, and swapping the primary and secondary owners, or if that was in error. Based on the submitted paperwork, this is exactly what the submitters are requesting.

2: Beatrice Domenici della Campana - New Heraldic Title (KLoI)

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in March of 2000, via An Tir.

Rósa Araldo

No major changes.

Rósa is the Italian word for the flower rose, per the Florio 1611 Italian/English dictionary (Appendix H source)

http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/florio/search/467...

Araldo is the Italian word for the job of herald, also per Florio

http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/florio/search/050...

Araldo can also be found in a 1509 letter sent from Venice, describing the visit of Montjoy Herald, "Un araldo del re di Francia" (a herald of the king of France), to the ruling council of Venice.

(page 48 of the pdf, page 34 of the numbered book, under header number 6)

It was questioned in commentary as to if the use of Rose is allowed here. The following point was raised by Ogress:

The use of Rose as one of two heraldic charges in a household name does not presume on the Order of the Rose. On the February 2015 Letter of Acceptances and Returns we accepted the household name Rose and Wheel Inn, explaining:

Section NPN4B2 states, "Order and award names may not include the names of the peerage orders or overt references to famous knightly orders such as the Garter. Other types of non-personal names may only use such elements in contexts where no reference to the order is likely to be perceived by members of the order and the general populace." As this is a household name that is most easily understood as the name of two heraldic charges rather than a reference to the peerage order combined with some other element, we consider it unlikely that confusion would occur among the populace as the result of using the name of the peerage order in this context. Therefore, we can register this name. [Henry Hosteler. Household name Rose and Wheel Inn, 2/2015 LoAR, A-An Tir]
Here, the reference to rose likewise will be understood as a reference to two heraldic charges rather than a reference to the peerage order.

Further citations for Rosa were also supplied by Wreath:

There are some earlier (13th and 14th C) citations for 'rosa' from Tesoro della lingua Italiana delle Origini (http://tlio.ovi.cnr.it/TLIO/), sv. RÒSA:

[10] Dante, Commedia, a. 1321, Par. 31.1, vol. 3, pag. 509: In forma dunque di candida rosa / mi si mostrava la milizia santa / che nel suo sangue Cristo fece sposa...

4: Helen of Haldane - New Name (KLoI) (NP) & New Device (KLoI)

Per fess vert and argent, a paintbrush fesswise and a quill pen transfixing an escroll counterchanged within a bordure engrailed Or

Submitter desires a feminine name.
No major changes.

de Haldane is a locative byname found in No Copy Source [Black] Black, Surnames of Scotland, p. 337, s.n. Haldane, with the submitted form dated to 1296. Use the Anglica Franca for "de Haldane" for "of Haldane"

Helen - No Copy Source [Withycombe] Withycombe, E.G. Oxford Dictionary of English Christian Names. 1947 edition: p. 148 "The common English form has always been Ellen, but Helen and Helena came in at the Renaissance."

Helen - found dated 1438 (Boutflour) and 1588 (Macartney) in "Feminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames" by Talan Gwynek (http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/reaneyHZ.html)

Helen - feminine given name found in 16th Century Gloucestershire Names by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (Sara L. Uckelman) http://heraldry.sca.org/names/english/late16.html

Submission Notes:

Issue raised in commentary: If there are only two primary charges, the paintbrush and the pen, then there is an unity of orientation issue here. If both the pen and scroll are primary, then this is slot machine.

5: Helen of Haldane - New Augmentation of Arms (KLoI)

OSCAR is unable to find the name, either registered or submitted.

Per fess vert and argent, a paintbrush and a quill pen transfixing an escroll fesswise counterchanged, a bordure engrailed Or, and for augmentation, the paintbrush replaced with a griffin passant Or maintaining a paintbrush palewise argent

Augmentation granted 9/10/22 by Ajax and Gaia

http://northshield.org/Populace/Persona.aspx?...

Question was raised in commentary as to if this is correct construction of an augmentation:

This augmentation replaces all the instances of paintbrushes in the original device with the augmenting griffin. This makes the underlying device unidentifiable.

"We note, for the record, that augmentations are allowed to obscure underlying charges which are part of a group consisting entirely of a single type of charge, even to the point where the underlying charges are unidentifiable, based on period examples of exactly this practice." (emphasis mine) https://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2010/12/10-12lar.html Andreas Seljukroctonis, A-Calontir]

Thus ends the July Internal Letter for Northshield.

In service to Northshield & the College of Arms
