Caid LoI dated 2023-10-22

Unto Emma Laurel, Elisabetta Pelicana, Iago Wreath, and the College of Arms does Séamus Dolphin send much delayed greetings. I beg of you to overlook my unworthiness and raise your eyes to the following submissions of names and armory from the unseasonably warm lands of the Kingdom of Caid.

Eternal thanks to Eridana Ambre, Ottavio El Munadi, Damien Sable Fret, Hrorek Chevron, Paul Courtesy, Gwen Recorder, Jeanne Marie Palimpsest, Hemneter Pennefer, Alienor De Clare, Fiachra an Doire, and the entire Caid College of Heralds for their support over the past two months.

Free Company of the Heart and Flame

(Fieldless) Within and conjoined to a lantern frame, a heart Or enflamed to chief gules

This household name is constructed using the English inn sign pattern "designator + heraldic charge + heraldic charge" found in "Alys's Simple Guide to Household Names" by Mistress Alys Mackyntoich https://heraldry.sca.org/names/households.html

Free Company is the designator

The heraldic charges are Heart (http://mistholme.com/dictionary/heart/) and Flame (http://mistholme.com/dictionary/flame/)

This art uses the frame from Viking Answer Lady's lantern on Traceable Clip art http://heraldicart.org/lantern/ , which is a thick frame and not thin, but removes the panes entirely to be a frame alone, not a true lantern.

OSCAR is unable to find the name, either registered or submitted.

House of Wandern Wheel

Sound (Wandering Wheel) most important.

Submitted as House of Wandering Wheel. No documentation was found to use Wandering as a given name

The submitter's first choice is Wandering, second Wandern, third Wanderer and fourth Wander

Wandern is possibly a Dutch given name found in familysearch records dated to 1592

Wandren Clemen Burial 13 Jan 1592 Amsterdam, Noord-Holland https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6899-9549 see image
The name on the record is not clear and the Caid College is not confident that the name is actually Wandern. Assistance appreciated

Wanderer From the April Lochac 2021 Submission of 6: Geoffrey of Exeter https://oscar.sca.org/index.php?action=145&id=110606

the Wanderer is a lingua Anglica form of the constructed byname 'le Wanderare".

Wanderare ("one who wanders or travels about") is found as a noun dated to 1440 (Middle English Dictionary).

Similar attested bynames include the 13th century Wander and Wanderbug (from the Middle English Dictionary), the 14th century Wayfarar (found in Jönsjö), and the 12th-13th century (le) Pelerin ("one who travels to a holy place, traveler from foreign lands", found in the Middle English Dictionary and Reaney & Wilson, s.n. Pilgrim).

"Although the more likely lingua Anglica form of the submitted byname omits the definite article the Appendix A of SENA allows the registration of Middle English descriptive and occupational bynames both with and without the article the/le. Therefore, we overturn the precedents disallowing the use of the definite article, and allow the registration of the Wanderer as a lingua Anglica form of the constructed byname le Wanderare." [Trumbrand the Wanderer, September 2015, A-Ealdormere]

Wander is found as an English surname in late period dated to 1575 used as a given name found in familysearch records

Kath. Wander father Wander Christening 5 Jun 1575 Saint Mary Matfelon, Stepney, Middlesex, England C00629-1 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N55L-VY1

Wheel is an English surname dated to 1548 found in Familysearch records

Rychard Wheel Marriage 3 May 1548 Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate, London, England, United Kingdom M00134-1 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V529-3LW

Wanderer Wheel or Wander Wheel are registerable SCA names with no conflicts found

The Household name is formed using Alys's Simple Guide to Household Names by Alys Ogress https://heraldry.sca.org/names/households.html where it is stated

A person's full name may be used to form a household name in English and Scots. In the July 2018 Cover Letter states:

Previous precedent stated that the only attested pattern for English household names using a person's full name was House of + given name + last name. [Brigit inghean ui Dhomhnaill. Household name House of Hammer Fall, 11/2014 LoAR, A-East] However, new data has now been found in English and Scots for inn-sign names using a person's full name, including Walter Chepmannis taveroun (1526) and the Eden Berys [Tavern] (1483). Based on this new data, as of the date of publication of this Letter, we hereby expand the 2014 precedent and expressly allow English and Scots household names in the form given name + last name + House. Further, the designators Inn, Tavern or Brewhouse (or any period spellings thereof) can be used instead of House in English or Scots inn-sign names based on a person's full name. Where the person's full name comes before the designator, it should be in the possessive form. This ruling applies only to English and Scots household names; the use of this pattern for household names in other languages must be documented.

6: Faolán mac an Taoisigh - New Name (NP) & New Device

Per pall Or, azure and vert, two wolves combattant argent

Submitter desires a masculine name.

Faolán is a Gaelic masculine given name found index of Names in Irish Annals: Fáelán / Faolán by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Faelan.shtml and is an Early Modern Irish nominative form dated from 874 to 1423.

mac an Taoisigh

-We have "of the chieftain" in the Irish Annals(1315 and 1421) as "na Taoiseach," using the plural article "na" so it's actually "of the chieftains" as documented. https://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Descriptiv...

-The singular article would be "an," as it is in the submission.

- As far as the use of "Mac" with a descriptive byname, we have "Mac an Ultaigh," which follows the same form. https://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/FamilyName...

Taoisigh is the correct singular genitive form of Taoiseach, so spelling as submitted should be correct.

Mari's Index also has examples of the spelling taoisigh. Under Fiachrae / Fiachra (https://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Fiachrae.shtml) there is the example "Flann mac Fiachrach Uí Floinn adhbar taoísigh Shil Maoil Ruain" (Flann, son of Fiachrach Uí Floinn, was the chieftain of Shil Maoilruain). And others such as "Donnchadh Ballach Mac Samhradhain adbar taoisigh Teallaigh Eachdach" (s.n. Donnchad / Donnchadh, https://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Donnchad.shtml).

Given the prevalence of MacIntosh in later records, I'm really surprised not to find "mac an Taoisigh" in Mari's Index.

Azure, a wheel and on a chief Or three pawprints sable

Mercedes is the submitters legal given name on her CA drivers license, witnessed by Eridana Ambre, Consulting Herald for Calafia, and Fairy Gad Mother, Caid's Kingdom Social Media Officer

Eirný is a Norse feminine given name that the submitter would like to use for a matronymic byname.

Lind has "Eynrý, -iar -iu." If we are interpreting that correctly, it means that the patronymic could be either Eirniardottir or Eirniudottir. Submitter will accept Eirniardottir but would prefer the spelling "Eirnysdottir" for the byname if it can be documented.

11: Parsa of Kor River - New Name (NP) & New Device

Per fess enarched azure and vert, three suns and a shahbaz displayed reguardant Or

Submitter desires 6thC BCE Persian name from around the time of Cyrus the Great.

Parsa is a reconstructed Old Persian given name from the Achaemenid period (approximately 530-300 BCE). It is reconstructed from the attested Elamite name Ba-ir-iš-šá.[1]

[1] Encyclopedia Iranica, PERSONAL NAMES, IRANIAN iii. ACHAEMENID PERIOD (https://iranicaonline.org/articles/personal-names-iranian-iii-achaemenid)

Kor River is the lingua Societatis form of a river formerly named Araxes located in the Fars province of Iran. (https://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#PN1B2c)

The pattern is <given>+<locative>. SENA Appendix A states for Persian names, "The most common structure is a single given name followed by a locative byname derived from the adjectival form of a placename (usually adding -īo the placename for both men and women)."

Another option the submitter will accept if the initial name doesn't work is Azar of Parsa

Any assistance the College of Arms can provide to assist in documenting this name would be appreciated!
