Once more I am guided by the generous hand and wise advice of Lions Blood Emerita Sadhbh Bheag, and thus I lay before you the newest heraldic submissions from An Tir.

This letter will open for commentary by heralds from outside of An Tir on the 26th of September.

Commentators, please cite references to SENA when noting problems.

Óblauðsson - patronymic surname created from given name according to guidance at Gunnvor silfraharr's Viking Answer Lady website (https://vikinganswerlady.com/ONNames.shtml).

ørrabein - surname listed in Landnamabok, drawn from list compiled by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (Sara L. Uckelman) at https://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/vikbynames.html, accessed on June 22, 2023.

Given name + patronym + descriptive byname is one of the patterns found in Appendix A for Old Norse/Old Icelandic. Descriptive byname is not typically capitalised.

3: Cecille Vanier la Françoise -New Name (NP)

Submitter desires a feminine name.
Client requests authenticity for 13th-16th C France.

Vanier: French Occupational byname dated to 1292
http://heraldry.sca.org/names/parisbynames.html

4: Decimus Marius Gavinius Brittanicus -New Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in August of 2019, via An Tir.

5: Derek FitzRobert -New Name (NP) & New Device

Per pale argent and sable, a crescent, an increscent, and decrescent one and two, counterchanged.

Meaning (Derek Son of Robert) most important.

Derek is the submitter's legal given name -- submitter presented his driver's license to Sara Beacon and Fina Black Lion.

Per SENA Appendix A, the construction "Fitz Father's Name" is a documented patronymic name pattern in Middle/Early Modern English, and Robert is a name found in England in Early Modern English from at least 1488 https://dmnes.org/name/Robert

As the legal name allowance means that Derek is neutral in time and place, FitzRobert is an allowable byname. Fina Black Lion also has seen the submitter's driver's license.

6: Derek FitzRobert -New Badge

OSCAR is unable to find the name, either registered or submitted.

Per pale argent and sable, three oak leaves in pall inverted counterchanged

7: Drake Volante -New Name (NP) & New Device

Per fess azure and sable, a wyvern erect, wings addorsed and tail nowed, in chief three crescents argent.

Drake: "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J3VX-KXL : 4 February 2023), Drake Frier, 1591. (Batch P01515-1)

Volante: "France, Haute-Garonne, Parish and Civil Registration, 1939-1993", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6XJH-TJW9 : 1 April 2022), Cecile Volante, 1666. (no batch number)

Reaney & Wilson s.n. Volant lists the dated forms Henry le Volaunt (1221) and Robert le volant (1221). Commenters found Volant (1471) and Volande (1528) as bynames s.n. Volant in "Names from Lallaing 1384 - 1600" by Domhnall na Moicheirghe (http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/names/lallaing_names.html). These spellings suggest that the requested Volante could be plausible.

8: István Győri -Resub Device

OSCAR thinks the name is registered as István Gyori in July of 2011, via An Tir.

Bendy and per bend sinister indented azure and argent

Submitter is from Three Mountains.

This submitter's previous device submission was returned at Laurel for conflict with the device of Pariselle Chouet, Bendy sinister and per bend azure and ermine. The previous submission is attached, as well as the device of Pariselle Chouet, for reference.

We believe the new design addresses the reason for return.

"Estoria de Espana, II" by Alfonso X (1270-1284). In "Estoria de Espana, II": "... el casamiento del Rey don fernando & de la noble Reyna donna Katalina ..." ("the wedding of the king Fernando & the noble Reyna Donna Katalina ...")

de la Loto - while no documentation was found for this specific name, the list of locative surnames from the account books of Isabel la Catolica (1477-1504)
(this list can be found at heraldry.sca.org/names/isabella/locative.html) includes multiple examples of bynames using the construction of "de la _" with the blank being filled in by a variety of words, including de la Parra (of the vine), de la Pena (of the rock), and de la Concha (of the shell). The byname of de la Loto (of the Lotus) fits with this naming scheme.

In addition, this naming schema in conjunction with botanicals can be found elsewhere. For example, here are two references from volumes accessed via the Real Academic Espanola:
"Avisos de 1640" by Jose Pellicer de Ossau Salas i Tovar contains reference to the byname "de la Rosa" (of the Rose)
"Acta" by Anonymous contains reference to the byname "de la Pina" (of the Pine)

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in August of 2022, via An Tir.

Paly of four gules and ermine, on a chevron Or a cross botonny azure between two pomegranates palewise gules slipped and leaved vert and on a chief sable a cock between two crescents argent.

Old Item: Gules, a demi-annulet argent issuant from a rock issuant from base proper cleft palewise by a natural river flowing to base argent, to be retained as a badge.

This is being submitted as an Individually Attested Pattern under SENA section A.4. The armory being submitted has a complexity of 12, with six tinctures (azure, argent, sable, ermine, Or, and gules) and six charge types (chevron, cross botonny, pomegranate, chief, crescent, cock).
This high complexity in armory is found as a regional pattern during the tenure of Wriothsley Garter King of Arms and his father and predecessor Writhe Garter in Tudor-era England. The examples given here are taken from the Dictionary of British Arms: Medieval Ordinary (DBA), which is a four-volume listing of armory from British sources.
Specifically, all of the examples listed here are taken from one of the following three sources in DBA:

  • "XPat" listed as "Thomas Wriothesley's Roll of Patents', ed. Mill Stephenson & R. Griffin, Arch69, temp Henry VIII [Soc. Antiq.MS 443 664 vol VI] (FND)"
  • "XV" listed as "Wriothesley's Chevrons transcr HS London, cl525 [Pt I Norwich Public Library MS 4406, Pt II - Soc.Antiq.MS 476, 9 pp 322-31]"
  • "WK" listed as "Writhe's book of Knights, temp Hen VII )BRKM)"

This thus dates all of the cited pieces of armory to the tenure of Writhe Garter and Wriothsley Garter, within Tudor England (the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII).
An IAP, under SENA section A.4, requires three independent examples of armory which closely match the pattern of the exact practice which deviates from our core-style armory. In this case, that means we need at least three examples of armory which has a complexity of twelve or higher.
Examples of complexity 12 or higher:

  • Paly of 4 Gu and Vt on chev Arg greyhound's head erased Sa betw 2 pd 5foils Az on chf Or roundel Sa ch with demi-lion Arg the roundel betw 2 crescs Sa each ch with 3 roundels Arg LAWSON. L1 416, 6; L2 314, 8. (lion a&l Gu). LAWSON. XPat 329; Arch 69, 94. LAWSON, Geo, of London. L10 108(ciii), 7. (lion a&l Or). LAWSSON. L9 44a, 5. (lion ramp gard couped Arg a&l Or). LAWSSON, George, of Lond'. WK 536. (lion couped Arg a&l Or). (pg 449 vol 2, shows crescents and paly of 4 field, on a chevron a Y between two X's, complexity 13)
  • Gu chev Erm betw 3 lion's heads erased Or on chf Arg 2 bars nebuly Purp & pale Az ch with pelican vulning herself Or all in border Or ch with 8 roundels Az FOX, Joh, of Ropsley, Lincs, gent. XPat 293; Arch 69, 91. (DBA vol 2 pg 422, complexity 13)
  • Gu chev checky Arg and Sa betw 3 roundels Arg each ch with pd 5foil Purp on chf Or dove betw 2 columbines Az s&l Vt FARYNGTON. XPat 297; Arch 69, 92. (Hugh Cook als Farrington last Abbot of Reading). DBA v2 pg 409 (complexity 12?, also shows chief with X between two Y's)
  • Erm chev wavy Az betw 3 moor's heads couped Ppr habited Sa fretty Or on chf checky Arg and Gu cresc Or betw 2 roundels Sa on each roundel dog courant Or DODMORE. XPat 99; Arch 69, 76. (granted to Rauff Dodmore, Mayor of London temp Hen 8). DBA v2 pg 409 (complexity 13, also shows chief with X between two Y's, crescent)

The requirements for an IAP also require that every motif (charge, tincture, etc.) be documented from the same armorial regional time and place. In the four examples above, we have already documented all of the six tinctures used, and three of the six charges (chevron, chief, crescent), as well as the paly of 4 divided field. We must therefore additionally give examples showing that crosses botonny, cocks, and pomegranates slipped and leaved are all documentable within this same armorial region:

  • Or a salt betw 4 martlets Sa & on canton Arg a pomegranate s&l Ppr GUILDFORD, Sir Hen, KG. Leake. (d1531/2; qtly with Halden; 26th stall, Prince's side, St Geo Chapel.) GULDEFORD, Sir Hen, KG. XK 87. DBA Vol 4 pg 401 (shows pomegranates slipped and leaved)
  • Arg chev Sa betw 3 cocks Gu [COCKWORTHY]. CRK 1465. COCKWORTHY. M3, 1149. (legs Sa). COCKWORTHY. X V I 833. DBA Vol 2 pg 303 (shows cocks)
  • Sa cross botonny betw 2 leopard's faces in chf & 2 5foils in base Or in border engr Arg ch with 8 roundels Gu WESTBERY. XPat 88. DBA Vol 3 pg 207 (shows cross botonny)
