This letter contains the issues raised in the April 2023 LoAR for CoA discussion. The text in this letter is copied verbatim from that LoAR; it is provided here for convenience. As with a June LoI, these matters are currently scheduled for the Pelican and Wreath meetings in September 2023. Original commentary, responses, and rebuttals to commentary must be entered into OSCAR no later than Thursday, August 31, 2023.

1: Overall Charges - New Other

Many of our rules regarding overall charges have been in place in one form or another for decades. As our understanding of period armory has expanded, and the number of sources for armory outside of England has increased, it is worth revisiting these rules to see what these new sources of data can tell us about period practice. Therefore, we request that commenters research period sources for examples of overall charges and how they were used. The type of data that would be useful includes, but is not limited to:

  • What categories of charges (compact, long, animate) were used in overall arrangements, both as the surmounting charge and the charge being surmounted?

  • Was there ever more than one overall charge group in a design?

  • Did overall charges typically contrast with the field, or with the charge they surmount?

  • Did overall charges ever overlie both a primary and secondary charge group? Or a peripheral group?

  • When and where did various patterns of overall charge use occur?
