An Tir LoI dated 2018-06-19

Unto Dame Juliana de Luna, Laurel Queen of Arms; Mistress Alys Mackintosh, Pelican Queen of Arms; Master Cormac Mór, Wreath King of Arms; and all esteemed members of the College of Arms does Elizabeth Turner de Carlisle, Lions Blood Herald, send greetings and salutations;

It is the intent of the An Tir College of Heralds to register the following items. Some items have been processed by the Tir Righ College of Heralds and are marked as such:

1: Anne Brockton - New Name & New Device

Sable, on a fess Or a brock passant regardant sable marked argent.

No changes.
Meaning (Brockton means) most important.

<Anne> is dated to 1218 England in Withycombe.

<Brockton> is dated to 1297 England in R&W.R&W sn. Brockton

William of Brockton 1297.

SENA Appendix A says that English locative bynames can be unmarked.

No conflicts found.

This device was recolored at Kingdom with the submitter's permission.

2: Anne Brockton - New Alternate Name

OSCAR is unable to find the name, either registered or submitted.

Chikkaya Kali

Submitter desires a feminine name.
No changes.
Sound (It's easy to pronounce) most important.

<Chikkaya> is a prepended family name dated to 1535 India in "Women's Names from (Mostly) 16th Century Inscriptions at Tirupati (India)" by Tangwystl verch Morgant Glasvryn <https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/india/tirupati_f.html>

<Kali> is a given name dated to the 10th-14th century India in "An Analysis of South Indian Female Names found in Donors, Devotees and Daughters of God" by Irayari Vairavi <http://sites.google.com/site/vairavisca/Home/creations/dddog-names>

"Medieval Tamil Names" by Ursula Georges, https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/ursula/tamil/:

Elizabeth Turner de Carlisle found in Ursula's document there is a section that discusses the use of gods and goddesses' names by temple women: Men and women inside and outside the temples bore the names of gods. Even people who were not Hindu used the names of Hindu gods during this time period. However, temple women were significantly more likely than other women to use the name Nakkan, one of the names of the god S/iva. Both men and women also used the names of goddesses. These names were not linked to any particular religious office; in particular, temple women often bore the names of goddesses other than the consort of the god whose temple they served. Some women were named after the shrines or temples of gods. These were frequently distant, famous shrines; temple women were not named after the temples they lived in. Therefore we agree that Kali is a likely name.

No conflicts were found.

3: Droston Thomas - New Name & New Device

4: Droston Thomas - New Badge

OSCAR is unable to find the name, either registered or submitted.

(Fieldless) A wolf's head erased argent charged with a tiwaz rune azure

5: Ealusaid of Ros - New Badge

OSCAR is unable to find the name, either registered or submitted.

(Fieldless) On a polypus Or an escallop azure.

This submission is to be associated with Ealusaid of Ros

Tir Righ Submission

Ealusaid of Ros - This name was registered in June of 2017 (via An Tir).

The original submission, (Fieldless) A polypus Or was returned at Kingdom for multiple conflicts.

6: Elspeth Farre - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name on the An Tir LoI of June 30, 2017 as submitted.

Purpure, a dragon sejant affronty wings displayed Or, a bordure parted bordurewise Or and sable.

Tir Righ Submission

Please consider extending the allowance for quadrupeds sejant affronte by a month in this case - it is entirely Red Flame Herald's fault that this did not get on the May letter to be decided in August and not at all the submitter's.

The original submission, Purpure, a pale sable fimbriated argent, "overall" a dragon sejant affronty with wings displayed Or. was returned for lack of identifiability of the posture of the overall charge and for violation of SENA Appendix I, Section C, which requires that overall charges be substantially on the field.

7: Galath ab Edwin - New Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in June of 2016, via An Tir.

(Fieldless) A winged boar rampant contourny argent

Tir Righ Submission

The previous submission, (Fieldless) A winged boar rampant argent was returned at kingdom for conflict.

8: Hallveig Sigrúnardóttir - New Name Change

OSCAR NOTE: the old name was registered in October of 2002, via An Tir.

Old Item: Muriel qui porte les chaperons, to be released.
Submitter desires a feminine name.

Tir Righ Submission

Originally submitted as Hallveig Sigrúnsdóttir

The byname was corrected for grammar by kingdom commenters. The consulting herald has confirmed that the submitter's intent was for an Old Norse Viking Age name, not post-Viking later period Scandinavian.

Hallveig - Geirr-Bassi pg 11

Sigrun - pg 82 of the Nordiskt runnamnslexikon as translated by C.L. Ward - see attached printouts.

Matronymic construction per Geirr Bassi pg 17, SigrOn -> SigrOns + dottir -> SigrUnsdottir

9: Ieuan Gower - Resub Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in April of 2006, via An Tir.

(Fieldless) Three feathers banded the center one crowned Or

Tir Righ Submission

The submitter's previous badge (Fieldless) Three feathers crossed at the tips enfiling a coronet Or. was returned by Laurel for contrast and recognizability issues. The feathers and coronet are the same tincture, making it difficult to recognize either type of charge.

While submitters generally agreed that the new submission is better than the previous, there were still concerns that it still fell short of our standards for identifiability.

Two DCs were found against England, Heir Apparent of but the visual similarity remains striking.

The submitter is a duke and entitled to a coronet.

10: Ivon Drengr - New Name & New Device

Sable, a bend gules fimbriated argent between a double-bitted axe and a sword argent

Submitter desires a masculine name.
No changes.

Ivon:http://heraldry.sca.org/names/paul/h-j.html

Drengr is a Norse byname found in Aleydis van Vilvoorden [LB notes submitter's handwriting hard to read for author's name] 'Bynames from Snorri Sturlason's Norse Kings Sagas'. http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/drafts/snorri-bynames.html

Orle found the following:<drengr>, Andres, Íslenzkir Annálar, 1305; Óláfr, Heimskringla; Ǫgmundr, Heimskringla, †c.1154. "Youth, young man", a brave and capable man, cf. Snorri's "drengir heita vaskir menn ok batnandi" [valiant men are called drengir and likely prospects].

Info is from a combo of Finnur Jonsson's Tilnavne i den Islandske Oldlitteratur (Copenhagen: H.H. Thieles Bogtrykkeri. 1908. http://heimskringla.no/wiki/Alfabetisk_fortegnelse_over_tilnavne); dates from E.H. Lind Personbinamn s.n. <drengr> col. 64.

Old Norse & Russian can be combined early under Appendix C

No Conflicts Found

11: Louisa of Lorne - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name on the An Tir LoI of September 30, 2016 as submitted.

Gules, a dog rampant reguardant Or maintaining in his upper paw an arrow bendwise sinister argent and on a point pointed Or a pair of sewing needles crossed in saltire azure

The submitter's previous device was returned by Laurel in September 2017 as follows:

Louisa of Lorne. Device. Per chevron inverted gules and Or, in pale a talbot rampant regardant Or maintaining a weaver's shuttle argent and two needles in chevron inverted, crossed at the tips azure.

This device is returned for violation of SENA A3D2c, which requires that charges in the same charge group be in a unified orientation and arrangement. The needles are blazoned in an arrangement (in chevron inverted, crossed at the tips) separately from the dog, which is a co-primary charge.

12: Meryld Godewyn of Kent - New Alternate Name

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in November of 1998, via An Tir.

Maerhild of Chent

No changes.
Language (Old English) most important.
Culture (Anglo-Saxon) most important.
Spelling (see above) most important.

Maerhild - p.345 Onomasticon Anglo-Saxonicum, William George Searle 1897.

PASE offers the following in support of the elements in Searle:

Mærheard (masculine, c.765)

Mærwynn (feminine, 967x975)

Aedilhild (feminine, late 7th - early 8th c.)

Baldhild (feminine, 710x720x731), and

Wulfhild (feminine, 1031)

Chent - p.325 The Place Names of England & Wales, Rev James B Johnston 1916, https://archive.org/stream/placenamesenglan00john#page/325/ s.n. Kent.

Kent's plausibility for use in Old English toponymics is supported by "Sigeward on Cent", a masculine name dated in PASE to 993-1005.

Submitted as Maerhild (or MaerHild) of Chent, we have dropped the bit in parenthesis to match the available documentation. No conflicts found.

13: Skjaldar-Þorsteinn - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name on the An Tir LoI of March 31, 2017 as submitted.

Quarterly sable and gules, in bend two bears dormant argent

The submitter's branch is Terra Pomaria.

The submitter's previous device was returned by Laurel in June 2017 as follows:

Skjaldar-Þorsteinn. Device. Quarterly sable and gules, in bend two bears dormant argent.

This device must be returned for redraw. Commenters were unable to identify the primary charges as bears dormant. As dormant is notorious for rendering the charges unidentifiable, submitters seeking to use the posture must take great care to make sure that all identifying features are featured in the charge, and that the charges themselves are large enough for easy recognition. In particular, the rounded ears should be more prominent and more clearly atop the head rather than pointing back from it. Upon resubmission, the submitter should center the charges in their respective quarters, and render them large enough to fill the available space.

14: Þóra Jórsalafari - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name on the An Tir LoI of March 18, 2018 as submitted.

Per chevron Sable and Gules a Wolverine passant Contourny, and in chief three mullets Argen

The submitter's branch is Stromgard.

The submitter's previous device was returned by An Tir in March 2018 as follows:

Þóra Jórsalafari. New Device. Per chevron sable and gules, a wolverine passant contourny and in chief three mullets argent.

This device is returned because commenters did not find it identifiable as a wolverine. We advise the submitter to include internal detailing, including the distinctive markings in the wolverine's fur, to make sure the animal looks sufficiently different from a wolf or bear.

15: Three Mountains, Barony of - New Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in January of 1973, .

Azure, a medusa head cabossed and a base indented of three points argent

This submission is to be associated with Aegidis Honoris, Ordo

The submitter included the following letter:

Greeting to Lion's Blood Herald and the College of Arms from Kateline, Mountains Pursuivant,

The Barony of Three Mountains has attempted to register a badge for the Ordo Aegidis Honoris for some 20 years. Due to the changes made to the Rules for Submission, I believe we now have a solution.

I present two versions of the proposed badge. The first is the Barony's preferred version. There is some question as to whether the Gorgon's head Or has a conflict with the Kingdom of Sweden. The second version appears to be clear. We would like to register both versions.

Submitted with the concurrence of the Baron & Baroness, the Officers and populace of Three Mountains.

It is signed by the Baron & Baroness, Chronicler, Minister of Arts & Sciences, Seneschal, Chamberlain, Deputy Archery Marshal, and three members of the populace at large.

17: Three Mountains, Barony of - New Badge Change

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in January of 1973, .

Azure, three piles Or surmounted by a base indented of three points argent

Old Item: Azure, three piles in point Or surmounted by a base indented argent., to be released.
This submission is to be associated with Order of the Mountain Sun

This is a new emblazon, replacing the badge of the same blazon which was registered in November of 1988.

The submitter included the following letter:

Greeting to Lion's Blood Herald and the College of Arms from Kateline, Mountains Pursuivant,

It has recently come to my attention that the badge registered to the Barony of Three Mountains for the Order of the Mountain Sun has a problem. The emblazon does not match the blazon, and the blazon is what the Barony wants registered. Therefore, with the concurrence of the Baron & Baroness, the Officers and populace of Three Mountains, I send this submission to replace the badge currently registered.

It is signed by the Baron & Baroness, Chronicler, Minister of Arts & Sciences, Seneschal, Chamberlain, Deputy Archery Marshal, and three members of the populace at large.

Correction to Badge (2018-Jun-29 09:06:39): To be very clear, after emailing with Kateline Mountains, they do not want to retain the old artwork. They want to take the old emblazon, get rid of it, and use this one as the registered emblazon instead. There is no confusion; they have made their wishes crystal clear to the An Tir Submissions team.

18: Ursula de la Mare - New Name

Submitter desires a feminine name.
Meaning (residing by the lake - French, English, Norman) most important.

The submitter simply wrote "Please see attached page" for documentation. There were some concerns regarding the documentation in commentary- fortunately the commenters came through with no-photocopy documentation.

DMNES sn. Ursa

Ursula f. Early Modern English. Barnstaple, Devon, England. 1554.

R&W sn. Delamar

Robert de la Mare 1190

Names are less the 500 years apart. No conflicts found.

19: Ursula von Freiburg - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in March of 2015, via An Tir.

Azure, in pale a brok statant and a book argent

Tir Righ Submission

The original submission, Per chevron argent and azure, two badgers sejant erect addorsed and an open book counterchanged a chief invected azure was returned at Laurel for redraw for multiple artistic issues.

20: Vémundr Syvursson - New Name & New Device

Pily barry argent and azure.

Submitter desires a masculine name.
Sound most important.
Language (Viking Age Norse) most important.

Tir Righ Submission

Vemundr - Geirr Bassi pg 16

Syvurr - pg 92 Nordiskt runnamnslexikon as translated by C.L. Ward, see attached printouts.

Patronymic construction per Geirr Bassi pg 17: Syvurr -> Syvurs + son -> Syvursson

The following potential conflict was found: Svea the Shortsighted

The following device associated with this name was registered in July of 2016 (via the East):

Argent, three piles fesswise throughout issuant from sinister azure.

Looking at the emblazon, it does not seem like Pily barry would be a legal blazon for Svea's device. The submitted device could be blazoned as Argent, four piles fesswise throughout issuant from dexter azure, in which case we have an SC for number of primary charges.

The above submission has images. To view them, see the URLs below:
