To Saito Takauji Gold Falcon and the esteemed members of the College of Heralds comes this missive from Dorcas Whitecap, Eyas. I seek your wise counsel on the following submissions, to prepare them for registration:

1: Æthelred the Well-read -New Name & New Device

Per chevron argent and sable, two wildcats salient respectant gules and a triquetra argent

Submitter desires a masculine name.

Æthelred - masculine given name. Sawyer 101 (dated 727 - 736) contains the spelling <Æthelred> (http://www.esawyer.org.uk/charter/101.html)

Sawyer 335 (dated 862) likewise contains the spelling <Æthelred> (http://www.esawyer.org.uk/charter/335.html)

the Well-read - descriptive byname. Bosworth-Toller has "ge-lǽred", meaning learned, erudite. (http://bosworth.ff.cuni.cz/048556) <Well-read> is a plausible Lingua Anglica form.

These wildcats came directly from the PicDic.


2: Bjólfr Gunnvaldsson -New Name & New Device

Gyronny arrondi sable and Or, a bear's head cabossed gules

Submitter desires a masculine name.
Culture (Old Norse) most important.

Argent, a torteau and on a chief indented azure a roundel between an increscent and a decrescent argent


4: Oisín Haconson -New Device

OSCAR finds the name on the Calontir LoI of February 06, 2018 as submitted.

Azure, an owl displayed sustaining in its talons a battleaxe fesswise, a bordure argent

There is a Step From Period Practice for the use of an owl displayed.


5: Rima al-Wadi -New Name & New Device

Per chevron azure and argent, two dragonflies chevronwise argent and a flower palewise purpure slipped and leaved vert

Submitter desires a feminine name.
Culture (Al-Andalus) most important.

Both names were found at "Andalusian Names: Arabs in Spain" by Juliana de Luna (Julia Smith) February 2001 (https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/juliana/andalusia/)

Rima is a feminine given name.

al-Wadi is found in the "Other women's bynames" section.

Construction of 'ism (single personal name) and lakab (a combination of words into a cognomen or epithet) is documentable to period. Both 'ism and lakab match submitter's desired gender.


6: Sigvarðr Skarfr -New Device

OSCAR finds the name on the Ansteorra LoI of June 28, 2017 as Sigvarðr SkarfR.

Checky gules and Or, a cormorant head erased proper pierced through the neck by an arrow fesswise reversed sable

This name was registered in September of 2017 (via Ansteorra).


7: Stephen Cousland -New Name

Client requests authenticity for England 13th or 14th century.
Sound most important.

Stephen - "Dictionary of English Surnames" p. 11 s.n. Angold has Stephyn Angold, 1568. Stephyn is the Middle English form. Wikipedia page about Stephen, King of England, was included. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen,_King_of_England

"An Index to the 1332 Lay Subsidy Rolls for Lincolnshire, England" by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (mka Kathleen M. O'Brien) has 65 occurrences of Stephen as a given name.

Cousland - Wikipedia page included which states, "Cousland is a village in Midlothian, Scotland." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousland Also included was hardcopy of page http://www.cousland.net/castle.asp , which states, "Cousland Castle, likely to have been built in the reign of William the Lion 1165-1214AD. Under the old ecclesiastical regime, Cousland was the seat of a Chapelry."

Cousland is found in Black's Surnames of Scotland. Page 175, s.n. Cousland. John Cousland 1522, Walter Cousland 1527 and 1531. Randulphus de Cousland 13th century.

Azure, in pale a lotus flower in profile and an owl argent

Submitter desires a masculine name.

Visvamitra - given name found in Sharma, Tej Ram "Personal and Geographical Names in the Gupta Inscriptions" pub. 1978, p. 90. Page 81 shows the prototheme <Visva> in names like Visvakarman, Visvanatha and Visvadatta. Page 91 shows the duterotheme <mitra> in the name Abhayamitra. Hard copy included.
