Atlantia LoI dated 2018-02-27

Unto Juliana Laurel, Alys Pelican, and Cormac Wreath, Greetings!

We have prepared the following items for your consideration, with intent to register them for the people of Atlantia.

I would like to thank the following commenters, whose assistance was most valuable in the preparation of these submissions: Alisoun MacCoul of Elphane (Metron Ariston), Basil Dragonstrike (Lions Heart), Ealasaid MacDonald, Etienne Le Mons (Sea Stag), Iago ab Adam, Juetta Copin, Ki no Kotori (Talon), Kryss Kostarev, Madoc Arundel (Garnet), Magnus von Lübeck, Maridonna Benvenuti, Ragnar Leifsson (Red Shark), Sabine Berard, Seraphina Delfino (Ragged Staff), Tankred Bras-de-Fer (Opal), and Thomasine Lestrange. Many thanks to all of you, for your continued assistance.

1: Alexandria Wright - Resub Augmentation of Arms

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in November of 2000, via Atlantia.

Vert, a three-tired natural fountain argent between three harps Or, for augmentation on the base of the fountain an open scroll fesswise azure charged with a quill fesswise argent

Submission History:

This is a resubmission after the March 2017 Kingdom return of "Vert, a three-tiered natural fountain between three harps Or, for augmentation on the base of the fountain a hurt charged with an open scroll and quill in saltire argent":

"This device is returned for redraw, for violating SENA A2C2 which states "Elements must be drawn to be identifiable." Commenters and decision meeting attendees has a difficult time identifying the quill in the augmentation, most did not see it at all, as it blends in very well will the scroll.

Augmentation Submission History:

September 2016 Atlantian Return of Vert, a three-tiered natural fountain between three harps Or, for augmentation on the base of the fountain a hurt charged with an open scroll and quill in saltire argent"

The augmentation was returned for redraw because the submitter stated in commentary that this was not the finally emblazon for the augmentation. The submitter stated she would be sending a new emblazon. The new form had not been received by Golden Dolphin by publication of the September LoI. Golden Dolphin is returning the augmentation so the submitter can send in the final emblazon that she would like registered."

Submitter was awarded an Augmentation of Arms on 10/4/2014 by William I and Kara I

2: Eericka Valdemarsdotter - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name on the Atlantia LoI of September 30, 2016 as submitted.

Azure, a pall cotised between a compass and two anchors, argent

Submission History: This is a resubmission after the April 2017 Laurel return of the previously-submitted device, Azure, a pall cotised between a "compass rose" and two anchors argent.:

"This device must be returned for violation of SENA A2C2, which requires that charges be identifiable. Precedent states:

This device is returned for redraw. Blazoned on the LoI as a compass rose, the tertiary charge is not a compass rose as it lacks any directional marker. It is not a compass star within and conjoined to an annulet as the greater points overlie the annulet. It is not an annulet and overall a compass star as the lesser points of the compass star do not extend over the annulet. As it cannot be accurately blazoned, it must be returned. [Simon d'Este da Mantua, 04/2007, R-Atlantia]

This charge has the same issues with lack of a directional marker and with some but not all points of the mullet overlapping the annulet.

If we consider the mullet and annulet as distinct secondary charges, then there are three charges (mullet, annulet, anchors) in the same secondary charge group, which is grounds for return under SENA A3D2a, which prohibits charge groups with more than two types of charges.

We encourage the submitter upon resubmission to depict the compass rose with all points of the mullet within the annulet, and with a northern indicator to avoid this issue."

3: Furia Theodosia - New Name Change

OSCAR NOTE: the old name was registered in March of 2011, via Atlantia.

Old Item: Feodosiia Alekseeva zhena, to be retained as an alternate name.
Submitter desires a feminine name.
No major changes.
Client requests authenticity for Roman, Byzantine.
Language most important.
Culture most important.

Furia: feminine form of Furius; 16th cent. Roman. http://heraldry.sca.org/names/roman.html
http://www.s-gabriel.org/910

Theodosia: 14th cent. Roman http://heraldry.sca.org/names/byzanine/fem_given_names.html

Consulting Herald: Gabriel James West

Golden Dolphin note: While the form does not specify what the submitter wishes to have done with her previously-registered name, I have contacted her and confirmed that she wishes to retain the old name as an alternate.

4: Guendolen le Renard - New Name Change & Resub Device

OSCAR NOTE: the old name was registered in January of 2003, via Atlantia.

Purpure, in pale conjoined a fox sejant argent and a dolphin haurient embowed Or, a bordure wavy argent

Old Item: Guendolen of Cumbria, to be released.
Meaning most important.

Guendolen is registered to the client by Laurel as <Guendolen of Cumbria> January 2003 and is grandfathered to the client. Originally it is the name of a literary character from Geoffery of Monmouth's work and may be a misreading of the masculine name Guendoleu.

le Renard translates from the French as "the Fox". <Renard> is found in "Names in the 1292 census of Paris", by Sara L. Uckelman, Chapter 3 page 152; http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/french/1292paris.pdf. It is also recorded "Surnames from Artois, 1601" by Aryanhwy merch Catmael. http://heraldry.sca.org/names/french/1601sur.html

It follows SENA Appendix A rule in both French and Welsh "given + byname".

Examples from the O&A include Guendolen Watkyns (November 2001) Guendolen of uxor Alexander (May 2007), Juliene le Renard (Jan 2016) and Mychael le Renard (October 2006).

Submission History:

This is a resubmission after the January 2003 Laurel Return of "Argent, on a bend gules a fox collared and shackled courant argent, in chief a thistle vert headed argent.:

The thistle was originally blazoned as proper. Thistles, when proper, have green leaves and slips. The "head" of the thistle is comprised of a ball of sepals with a tuft of petals at the top. The head of a thistle proper is drawn with the ball of sepals tinctured in vert and the tuft of petals tinctured in gules or purpure. (To quote Lions Blood, "Only the mohawk is purple.")

This thistle is drawn with the head tinctured in argent, on the argent field. As such, the charge has insufficient contrast, as a key identifying portion of the thistle has no contrast.

This is a complete redesign.

5: Iseulte of the Red Cliffs - New Device Change

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in November of 1988, via Atlantia.

Ermine, a unicorn rampant gules collared with a cornet argent, within a bordure sable
