Outlands LoP dated 2018-01-31

Unto the Outlands College of Heralds, our respected friends and colleagues who give freely of their time to provide commentary, and all others who come by these letters, on this 31st day of January, A.S. LII (2018 CE), does the Honorable Lord Gauvain Eisenbein send greetings on behalf of Master Angus Reid MacFarlane, White Stag Principal Herald.

Here follows the Kingdom of the Outlands' Letter of Presentation for January, 2018. This Letter contains all complete submissions received by Castle Herald between December 2 and January 1.

Anyone may comment upon the items found herein, and e-mail commentary to the herald's commentary list is encouraged. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Please have comments on items contained herein to Rampart Herald by January 20th, 2018. The next online Rampart meeting will be held January 21st, 2018. As a reminder, the College of Arms requests commentary on all items, including appeals.

Submissions heralds are strongly urged to review the guidelines at: "http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/#castle_instructions", as items not meeting these guidelines will be pended. Pended items will be administratively returned after they have appeared on three Letters of Presentation.

All name submissions should include a satisfactory write-up in the name documentation and commentary section of the submission form (which must also be forwarded in text form to Castle). Name forms with missing, incomplete, or poorly formatted write-ups will be pended until the problem is corrected.

Argent, two wolves combatant azure, a mountain of three peaks vert

This submission is to be associated with Award of the Wolves of Aarquelle

The previous submission, Argent, two wolves combattant azure, a mountain of three peaks vert, was returned on the June 2017 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2017-05-lop/1706-lor.html) with the following: {Returned for a redraw as the wolves are not consistent in their placement on the field - either both need to be touching the peaks or neither should touch the peaks. The wolves should be more heraldically lupine-like as several commentors noted they possess all the identifying features of heraldic tygers - horn on the snout, the style of tail. Commentors also recommend more defined peaks. Emblazon: http://oscar.sca.org/emblazons/Outlands/2017-06/aarquelle-wolf-c.jpg}

Azure, a double-horned anvil Or, a ford proper

This submission is to be associated with Award of the Anvil of Aarquelle

The previous submission, Barry wavy azure and argent, an anvil Or, was returned on the September 2017 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2017/09/17-09lar.html#Outlands_returns20) with the following: { This must be returned for violating SENA A2C1, which requires that "Elements must be drawn in their period forms and in a period armorial style." This depiction of an anvil was used in the device submission of Eynon ab Iohannes Mal, which was returned in the LoAR of December 2004, stating:

This is returned for lack of documentation for the depictions of the anvil and the sword used. On resubmission, the submitter should use depictions previously documented or provide documentation for the types of anvil and sword used here.

Absent documentation for this type of anvil, it is still not registerable.

Even if drawn correctly, this device would be returned for conflict: Stephen of Forth Castle, Per bend sable and paly gules and Or, a double-bitted anvil Or. There is one DC for the change of field, but none for type of anvil.}

Azure, in bend sinister a recorder and a sinister wing both bendwise inverted, a bordure wavy argent

This submission is to be associated with Order of the Eagle's Plume

The previous submission, Azure, in bend sinister a sinister wing bendwise inverted and a recorder bendwise, a bordure wavy argent, was returned on the September 2017 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2017/09/17-09lar.html#Outlands_returns20) with the following: {This must be returned for violation of SENA A3D2c, which requires that "The charges within a charge group should be in either identical postures/orientations or an arrangement that includes posture/orientation (in cross, combatant, or in pall points outward, for example)." In this submission, the wing is bendwise inverted, while the recorder is bendwise. Because their orientations must be separately blazoned, they are not in a unified orientation and must be returned.}

Azure, three broadswords inverted Or, a bordure wavy argent

This submission is to be associated with Order of the Sword Bearers of Aarquelle

The previous submission, Azure, three broadswords inverted Or, a bordure wavy argent, was returned on the June 2017 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2017-05-lop/1706-lor.html) with the following: {Returned for a redraw as the broadswords are not identifiable due to the strange cup or hilt. Azure, three rapiers in fess, a mountain of three peaks argent

This submission is to be associated with Award of the Silver Blade of Aarquelle

The previous submission, Azure, three rapiers in fess, a mountain of three peaks argent, was returned on the September 2017 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2017/09/17-09lar.html#Outlands_returns20) with the following: { This must be returned for violating SENA A2C1, which requires that "Elements must be drawn in their period forms and in a period armorial style." In the return of a badge for the Kingdom of Meridies in the LoAR of May 2017, Wreath stated:

The quillons and knucklebow which define the rapier as a heraldic charge are absent. No evidence was presented, and none was found in commentary, demonstrating that this guard is period either as a heraldic charge or an artifact. Absent such evidence, the design is returned for a redraw.

Likewise, absent documentation for this guard, this design is returned for a redraw.}

Barry wavy azure and argent, a mace Or

This submission is to be associated with Award of the Mace of Aarquelle

The previous submission, Azure, three bars wavy argent, a mace Or, was returned on the June 2017 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2017-05-lop/1706-lor.html) with the following: {Returned for a redraw as it was submitted with 'Barry azure and argent' but the barry field isn't a properly drawn barry - the azure and argent bands aren't distributed properly across the field. One of the other badges submitted by the Barony does have a properly drawn barry (https://oscar.sca.org/emblazons/Outlands/2017-06/aarquelle-anvil-c.jpg) so commentors recommend using that badge's barry for the redraw and consistency. On a heart Or a brown bear statant proper

This submission is to be associated with Order of Osorio's Heart

The previous submission, (Fieldless) On a heart Or a brown bear statant proper, was returned on the June 2017 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2017-05-lop/1706-lor.html) with the following: {Returned for a redraw as the "bear" needs to be centered and fully contained on the heart. The "bear" also has identifiabilty issues as it does not look anything like a bear. Please use a more standard heraldic rendition of a bear statant. (Fieldless) On a portcullis vert by a cowbell Or

This submission is to be associated with Order of Harmonia

The previous submission, (Fieldless) A chainless portcullis vert surmounted by a clapperless cowbell Or, was returned on the October 2017 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2017/09/17-09lar.html#Outlands_returns20) with the following: {This badge is returned for violation of SENA A2C1, which requires that charges be depicted in their period forms. From the bronze age onward, cowbells were used almost exclusively to keep track of livestock in the field, through use of the clapper sounding against the side of the bell. Other uses were ceremonial, but still required the clapper for sound. Clapperless cowbells used as percussive instruments are a 20th century innovation, making the depiction of a clapperless cowbell a disallowed modernism.}
