An Tir KLOI from Central/Summits dated 2018-01-06

Happy New Year, An Tir Heralds!

The following items were returned by An Tir in December 2017:

1. Helewisa de Frejous. New Device. Gules semy-de-lis Or, an albatross rousant contourny wings inverted argent.

This device is returned for administrative reasons because we cannot find the associated name registered in the O&A. The submitter may resubmit this with a name form included alongside the device -- or, if there /is/ a name registered, they should contact the submissions team and let us know. If the name is not registered, the submitter might be interested in knowing that Kingdom heralds were able to neatly document the name <Helewisa de Frejus> to the 14th century and would be happy to provide that documentation for resubmission. In addition, upon resubmission there should be far fewer and much larger fleurs depicted in the semy-de-lis, and the wings should not have a slight downward flip as it makes their positioning unblazonable. Wings can either be elevated and addorsed or addorsed and inverted, but they may not be elevated and inverted. Both the feet of the albatross should either be flat or for a true depiction of passant, one should be clearly raised off the ground - no part of the foot should be level with the other.

2. Varghoss jarnsida. New Device. Quarterly sable and vert, in bend a bear sejant erect and a bearded axe argent, cross Or.

This device is returned for having the appearance of marshalling, per SENA A6.F.3. The appearance of two different charges on a quarterly-divided field implies two different coats of arms being displayed together by an heir to both lines. The cross overall does not remove this appearance. The submitter should reorganize the elements of the device to avoid this effect.

The following items are submitted for consideration in January 2018:

3: Morikawa Kenji Katashige -Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in February of 2016, via An Tir.

Sable, two chevronels braced between a roundel and a stream embowed-counter-embowed argent

The submitter's branch is Terra Pomaria.

This device was originally returned in February 2016 by Laurel for the following:

Morikawa Kenji Katashige. Device. Sable, within two spatterdock leaves conjoined in annulo the kanji for "water" argent.

This device is returned for violating SENA A2C1 which states that "Elements must be drawn in their period forms". No dated documentation was provided by the submitter or in commentary to support the use of the charges used in this design in period.

This decision was appealed, and Laurel upheld the decision in February 2017:

Morikawa Kenji Katashige. Device. Sable, within two spatterdock leaves conjoined in annulo the kanji for "water" argent.

This device previously was returned in February 2016 "for violating SENA A2C1 which states that 'Elements must be drawn in their period forms'. No dated documentation was provided by the submitter or in commentary to support the use of the charges used in this design in period."

On this appeal, the submitter made an effort to document demi-hollyhock leaves as a period charge. Unfortunately, the documentation provided did not support the design used in the submission. The single picture supplied by the submitter of a visually similar design was undated, and thus is not reliable evidence of a period heraldic practice. Further, while there is evidence that hollyhock leaves were used in Japanese heraldry, no evidence of a demi-hollyhock leaf (or any kind of demi-leaf) was provided by the submitter or found by commenters. Therefore, this appeal is denied and the device must be returned again.

The submitted design most closely resembles stylized apricot leaves that were found in period Japanese heraldry, but not closely enough to allow the submitted design to be blazoned as apricot leaves. We suggest the submitter consider using the documented period apricot leaf design (such as that found here: http://mon.xavid.us/Mon/Apricot%20Leaves%20with%20Character%20in%20Ring) to achieve a substantially similar design.

This submission is a compete redesign.

I remain,

In service to An Tir,

Viscountess Elizabeth Turner de Carlisle

Lions Blood Herald
