Artemisia LoI dated 2017-08-27

Ii-wy em hotep Emma Laurel, Alys Pelican, and Cormac Wreath. Ankh, udja, seneb. Ii-wy em hotep members of the College of Arms. Ii-wy em hotep all who read these words from Sneferu Golden Pillar and the Artemisian College of Heralds,

These are the items which have passed kingdom scrutiny since Artemisia's latest LoI dated 2017-07-30. Enjoy.

1: Áine inghean Mhaghnusa - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in February of 2015, via Artemisia.

Azure, a three-tailed fox argent marked Or and in base a Celtic cross argent

This submission is to be associated with Aine inghean Mhaghnusa

The first iteration of this device Azure, a three tailed fox argent marked Or and in base a [flower] argent (image 1) was returned by Laurel Feb 2015 with the following comments:

This device is returned for redraw, for violating SENA A2C2 which states "Elements must be drawn to be identifiable." The flower in base is not a cherry blossom or any heraldically recognizable flower.

The second iteration of this device Azure, a three tailed fox sejant gardant argent marked Or, in base an equal armed Celtic cross argent (image 2) was returned by Laurel Oct 2016 with the following comments:

This device is returned for redraw. Blazoned on the Letter of Intent as a "Celtic cross", the charge in base is not actually any form of documented cross. The March 2013 Cover Letter has a section about the proper depiction of Celtic crosses, which have tapered arms and the annulet clearly conjoined to the arms (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2013/03/13-03cl.html#7). This is unblazonable as we have here a couped cross overlapping an annulet in a barely overall fashion.

2: Elaine le Fevre - New Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in October of 2015, via Artemisia.

Per pale gules and sable, in fess a spoon sustained by a nude bat-winged woman passant argent

This submission is to be associated with Elaine le Fevre

Kingdom's blazon for this device is based on the badge blazon of the Order of the Gryphon and Francisca Or, in fess an axe sable hafted proper sustained by a gryphon sable (image 1) (Aug 2015 via Artemisia).

3: Kamei Sayoko - New Name & New Device

Gules, a legless tortoise Or with wings conjoined in annulo argent

Submitter desires a feminine name.
Language (I care about Kamei however Sayoko can be messed with. Japan, Sengoku Jidai) most important.
Culture (I care about Kamei however Sayoko can be messed with. Japan, Sengoku Jidai) most important.

Submitters documentation (from original name form):

Sayo - Female Japanese given name found in ACADEMY OF SAINT GABRIEL REPORT 3001 by Aryanhwy mech Catmael

Kamei - Japanese family name found in Most Daring Raid of the Samurai by Stephen R. Turnbull (page 10) Commenters at kingdom questioned the validity of this source.

Documentation from Sǫlveig Þrándardóttir (acquired via Facebook PM):

Kamei 亀井 (lit. Turtle-well) should be in NCMJ as Kamei Korenori (1557-1612) shows up on page 260 of Sengoku Jinmei Jiten which is one of the sources for names in NCMJ.

Kamei is a family name and should therefore precede the personal name. The submitter has allowed this change.

4: Paidín Fáelad - New Device

OSCAR finds the name on the Artemisia LoI of May 28, 2017 as submitted.

Or, between three suns two and one vert, a pawprint azure

This submission is to be associated with Paídín Fáelad

This device was redrawn at kingdom with the submitters permission. The original artwork is image 1.

5: Titus Silvius Aquila - New Name & New Device

Sable, three suns two and one argent, and a bordure compony argent and gules.

Submitter desires a masculine name.

Submitter's documentation:

Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus, 30 December 39 AD - 13 September 81 AD - Roman emporer from 79 to 81 AD - Suetonius, Thelives of Twelve Caesars, Life of Titus 2.

Romulus Silvius (Said to have reigned 873 - 854 BC) was a descendant of Aeneas and a King of Alba Longa. - Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Roman Antiquities.

Saint Silvius of Tolouse was a bishop of Toulouse from 350 AD to 400 AD Catholic Encyclopedia - 2012.

Pontius Aquilla - Died 43 BC - Was a tribune of the Plebs, probably in the year 45 BC. - Suetonius: The life of Julius Caesar. (J.C. Rolfe English Translation.)

Documentation from Michael Gerard Curtememoire:

<Titus>. On the praenomen list in http://heraldry.sca.org/names/roman.html, "A Simple Guide to Imperial Roman Names" by Ursula Georges.

<Silvius>. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05731a.htm, "St. Exuperius", mentions St. <Silvius> in that spelling as a previous bishop of Toulouse, and is consistent with his reign being dated 360-400 at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvius_of_Toulouse. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_naming_conventions#History declares, "The historian Livy relates the adoption of Silvius as a nomen by the kings of Alba Longa in honour of their ancestor, Silvius", with careful explanation and citation (Livy actually says "cognomen"), documenting its usability as such here.

<Aquila>. Pontius <Aquila> is mentioned at http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/L/Roman/Texts/Suetonius/12Caesars/Julius*.html#78, translated at http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/e/roman/texts/suetonius/12caesars/julius*.html, paragraph 78. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucius_Pontius_Aquila shows his name in full with sourcing to the Corpus inscriptionum Latinarum, indicating that <Aquila> is indeed a cognomen.
