Drachenwald LoI dated 2017-06-27

Unto Emma Laurel, Alys Pelican, Cormac Wreath, and the commenting Members of the College of Arms, greetings from Mór Edelweiss, approaching you as deputy to Stefanu Albion this month.

It is the intent of the Drachenwald College of Heralds that the following submissions be registered.

1: Amphelise de Wodeham - New Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in March of 2014, via Drachenwald.

(Fieldless) On a linden leaf argent a wren azure.

2: Eleanor de Mundona - New Name

Submitter desires a feminine name.
No changes.

Eleanor is a female given name dated to 1361 in Reaney & Wilson, referenced in Feminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames by Talan Gwynek (https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/talan/reaney/reaney.cgi?Eleanor):

Eleanor 1361 Sudley

de Mundona is a byname dated to 1119 in Reaney & Wilson, page 317 s.n. Munden:

Ranulf de Mundona 1119

3: Elzebeth Múnserin - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name on the Drachenwald LoI of October 31, 2016 as submitted.

Per pale Or and azure a hedgehog counterchanged.

The submission was returned in LoAR 03-2017 (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2017/03/17-03lar.html#123):

Elzebeth Múnserin. Device. Azure, a hedgehog Or its quills impaling grapes purpure.

This lovely device is returned for conflict with the badge of Xena Baxter Wynthorpe: Vert, a hedgehog statant Or. There is only one DC for changing the field. The grapes here are considered equivalent to fructing, not held charges. Since they do not represent half of the charge, they cannot add a DC for tincture difference.

This resubmission is a complete redesign.

4: Ingimóð Lofríksdóttir - New Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in June of 2015, via Drachenwald.

Azure, a lynx head couped Or, in chief three saltorels and on a base argent a saltorel azure.

5: Isabel Northwode - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name on the Drachenwald LoI of November 30, 2016 as submitted.

Sable, a gryphon wings displayed Or maintaining a candle argent within a double tressure Or.

The submission was returned in LoAR 02-2017 (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2017/02/17-02lar.html#84):

Isabel Northwode. Device. Sable, a gryphon wings displayed maintaining a lit candle within a double tressure Or.

This device is returned for redraw, for violating SENA A2C2, which states "Elements must be drawn to be identifiable." Because held charges count for conflict checking purposes, they must be identifiable. Because of its small size and the fact that it is of the same tincture as the gryphon, the candle disappears in the details of the paw.

The submission is a redraw. The candle has been drawn larger and its tincture has been changed to argent.

6: Isabetta del Verde - New Household Name & New Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in January of 2012, via Drachenwald.

Society of the Golden Egg

(Fieldless) An egg Or.

Golden is dated to c1375 in the MED s.v. golden (adj) (http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/m/mec/med-idx?type=id&id=MED19037):

(c1375) Chaucer CT.Mk.(Manly-Rickert) B.3291: He golden apples rafte of the dragoun.

Egg is dated to 1592 in the OED s.v. egg (n) (http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/59878?rskey=94NF1l&result=1&isAdvanced=false):

The first definition is "The (more or less) spheroidal body produced by the female of birds and other animal species, and containing the germ of a new individual, enclosed within a shell or firm membrane," and while not demonstrated with a quote so early, the 3-letter spelling is shown as 15th-c. onward in the "Forms" listing.

"1592 G. Babington, Certaine Comfortable Notes Genesis (xvi.) f. 60, To bee woone with the Egg, and lost with the shell, is a great inconstancie."

Society of the. The November 2016 registration of the household name Company of the Anvil and Rose to Clare Lowemanns indicates that "Society of the" and "Company of the" are equivalent designators and both can be used by households (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2016/11/16-11lar.html#5):

"Submitted as Anvil and Rose Company, no documentation was provided (and none was found in commentary) for the pattern X and Y Company. However, we do have evidence of the pattern Society of X and Y from 15th century Germany, such as the Society of the Falcon and Fish, the honorable Society of the Scenthounds and Wreaths and the Society of the Unicorn and the Maiden. As the submitter permitted all changes, we have changed this household name to Company of the Anvil and Rose to follow this documented pattern."

The pattern of Company of [color] [heraldic charge] is evidenced on the 12-2012 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2012/12/12-12lar.html#31):

Summits, Principality of the. Household name Company of the White Gryphon.

"Submitted as Vanguard of the White Gryphon, no evidence was presented that vanguards had names. This name is suitable for use with the designator company (see for example the period order Companie du Cigne Noir or lordre de la Compaignie du Cine)."

Magdelena Grace Vane. Badge. (Fieldless) In pale a bee proper holding an annulet argent surrounding a capital letter M gules.

This device is returned for violating SENA A3D2a, for having "slot machine" armory, more than two types of charge in the same group. Precedent states:

This device violates our ban on so-called 'slot machine' armory. There are three types of charge in the secondary charge group: annulets, triquetras, and a phoenix. Unless the submitter can provide evidence that the annulet interlaced with a triquetra is a period heraldic motif considered to be a single charge, we will continue to interpret an triquetra and interlaced with an annulet as two charges. [Catherine Wentworth of Cambridge, R-Outlands, August 2008 LoAR]

We have a similar situation here, with three types of charge in the primary charge group: a bee, an annulet and the letter M

The resubmission has been redesigned so that the bee is the primary charge and the annulet and the letter are secondary charges.
