Gleann Abhann LoI dated 2017-06-06

6: Jaroslav of Gleann Abhann - New Name

Jaroslav: Masculine given name of Czech origin, found between 1287 and 1356. Found in "Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources", s.n. 'Jaroslav'. URL: http://www.dmnes.org/name/Jaroslav

of Gleann Abhann: locative surname. Gleann Abhann is a registered Kingdom in the SCA.

Further information was pointed out during internal commentary: 'Wickenden 2nd ed. sn. Iaroslav

Jaroslav, 1107

He points to Moroshkin (unsurprisingly) p. 213 (https://archive.org/stream/slavianskimenos00morogoog#page/n326/mode/1up) which points to Regesta Bohemiae et Moraviae but then I get a bit confused, because they seem to be pointing to records where it's spelled Jerozlaus and Jaroslaus in Latin-language documents.

The Cyrillic Ярославъ is the expected form of the reference in Wickenden to sn. Stog to Iaroslav Stogov, boiar's son. 1609

(His source is Tupikov p. 459, see: https://archive.org/stream/slovardrevnerus00tupigoog#page/n468/mode/1up)

If we use Wickenden's table of Romanisation (http://heraldry.sca.org/names/paul/zpreface.html) that gives us:

Ярославъ -> Jaroslav" in "International Phonetic" which might be closer to the submitter's desired spelling, than Jaroslaus?'

We give many thanks to ffride wlffsdotter for this information being brought to light.

Submitter desires a feminine name.
No major changes.

1406 Maude

1408 Mavde

1431 Maude

1433 Maude

In Middle English.'
