Northshield LoI dated 2017-05-31

Greetings unto Emma Laurel, Alys Pellicane, Brunissende Wreath, and the various members of the College of Arms, greetings from Merideth NiShionniach, Polaris Herald of Northshield, and her deputy Mira Fastova, Keythong Herald of Northshield.

What follows is May 2017 Letter of Intent for the Kingdom of Northshield.

We would like to thank all of the heralds, from within Kingdom and without, who contributed comments on OSCAR for the Northshield April Internal Letter of Intent.

1: Avonwood, Shire of - Resub Branch Name & Resub Device

Per fess wavy Or and azure, an oak tree couped and a laurel wreath counterchanged

Meaning most important.

Submission History: This branch name and device were returned for lack of a valid petition on the October 2016 LOAR, via Northshield. Although it had the required number of signatures, it lacked a date on the petition form. (https://oscar.sca.org/index.php?action=145&id=66443)

Kingdom Commentary Note: It was noted that the citations from Mills should be sufficient to document the form of the name so documenting "Avon" as a surname is wholly unnecessary. No changes have been made to the documentation as a result of this commentary. (https://oscar.sca.org/kingdom/kingsingleitem.php?kingdom=19&id=73745)

A petition declaring support for this branch name, dated and signed by the members and officers of this group, is included with this submission.

All elements of this name are found in "A Dictionary of English Place Names", 2nd ed, by A.D. Mills.

Avon - p 19. "Old river-name found several times in England, from a Celtic word meaning simply 'river'."

Wood - p 341. As shown in <Testwood>. "Lesteorde (sic) 1086 (DB), Terstewode c.1185. 'Wood by the River Test'"

ALSO,

Juliana de Luna's "Compound Place Names in English" (http://medievalscotland.org/jes/EnglishCompoundPlacenames/) gives examples of the pattern of [surname] + [generic toponym].

<Avon> is an English surname:

Agnes Avon; Female; Christening; 26 Jun 1586; Cranbrook, Kent, England; Batch: C03077-0 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JQCG-KMV)

<-wood> is a generic toponym, as demonstrated by atte Wode, found in Bardsley s.n. Attwood dated to 1273, and de la Wode, found in Bardsley s.n. Wood, dated to 1273.

The spelling "wood" appears in the Middle English Dictionary s.v. wode (n.2) in the example of Southewood dated to 1450.

Submission History: This branch name and device were returned for lack of a valid petition on the October 2016 LOAR, via Northshield. Although it had the required number of signatures, it lacked a date on the petition form. (https://oscar.sca.org/index.php?action=145&id=66443)

A petition declaring support for this device, dated and signed by the members and officers of this group, is included with this submission.

Blazon Change: Based on kingdom commentary, blazon has been changed from 'Per chevron azure semy of wheat stalks Or and argent, a sea dragon azure and a bordure counterchanged argent and azure' to 'Per chevron azure semy of wheat stalks Or, and argent, a sea dragon azure and a bordure counterchanged'. (https://oscar.sca.org/kingdom/kingsingleitem.php?kingdom=19&id=74773)

This badge is jointly owned.

4: Tyok Liftfot - Resub Appeal of Laurel Return of Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in April of 2016, via Northshield.

(Fieldless) An Oriental dragon's head cabossed azure

Submission History: This badge was returned by Laurel in September 2016, (via Northshield) as follows:

This device is returned for redraw, for violating SENA A2C2 which states "Elements must be drawn to be identifiable." Commenters had trouble identifying the dragon's head, potentially mistaking it for a demon's head. It might be difficult to achieve recognizability without the rest of the dragon's body.(https://oscar.sca.org/index.php?action=145&id=65514)

Submitter's Appeal: With this appeal, the submitter has included documentation showing a 15th century Chinese dragon on a carved lacquer box. (http://www.alaintruong.com/archives/2016/04/02/33604885.html)

See images #1, 2, and 3 below and in documents.

Kingdom Commentary Notes: There were three significant pieces of Kingdom Commentary.

1. It was noted in kingdom commentary that this submission had more of an appearance of an appeal than of a resubmission. Submitter was contacted to determine if he wished to change this submission to an appeal and he instructed me to change it to an appeal with the images included.

2. Several additional examples of oriental dragons heads were offered up in kingdom commentary:

The "Nine Dragons" scroll (九龍圖卷) at the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, is dated 1244, (http://www.mfa.org/collections/object/nine-dragons-28526)

Pair of Architectural Terminals, 16th century, China. The Walters Art Museum, accession number VO.97 (49.2378, 49.2379 (http://art.thewalters.org/detail/78073/pair-of-architectural-terminals/)

Roof-ridge ornament, Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) China. Shanxi Provincial Museum.

(http://www.artnet.com/magazineus/features/karlins/khubilai-khan-at-metropolitan11-23-10_detail.asp?p icnum=10)

Roof-ridge ornament, Western Xia dynasty (1038 - 1227) China. Yinchuan West Xia Imperial Tombs, Xixia Wangling.

3. And finally, it was begged of the Sovereigns to instead use http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#A1C as their yardstick: "the submitted emblazon must be reproducible by a competent heraldic artist, with only normal heraldic variation, from the written blazon." Applying that criterion, something very like the submitted emblazon is going to be the result any time.
