Ealdormere LoI dated 2017-03-27

Unto the Sovereigns and other members of the College of Arms of the Society, come greetings from Rylyn Buchanan, Green Mantle Herald

It is the intent of the Ealdormere College of Heralds to submit the following for your consideration.

This item was on the 06-2017 LoAR

1: Ana Yanka - Resub Name Change From Holding Name

OSCAR NOTE: the old name was registered in September of 2015, via Ealdormere.

Old Item: Ana of Ramshaven, to be released.
No changes.
Sound (Anyanka; but will not accept a patronymic) most important.

Submitted originally as Ana Ian'ka doch' Lisitsin, and later registered as the holding name Ana of Ramshaven on the Sept 2015 LoAR.

Commenters were unable to find examples of matronyms where the mother's name was not modified. ffride wlffsdotter suggested instead the form Ana Ian'kina doch' Lisitsina, but adding the suffix -ina is a major change, which the submitter does not allow. Therefore, we are unable to register this name as submitted.

Upon resubmission, the matronymic marker doch should be changed to doch' to use a consistent transliteration.

This is a complete change in last name.

Ana - 12th-13th century variant of Anna, Christian name, in Wickenden 3rd edition. http://heraldry.sca.org/names/paul/a.html

Yanka - alternate "Revised English System" transliteration of Ianka, diminutive of Anna dated 1088, ibid. used as an unmarked metronymic. For the "Revised English System" transliteration, the info is here: http://heraldry.sca.org/names/paul/zpreface.html

Matronymic bynames are a name pattern that does not need further documentation in Russian per SENA, Appendix A. They are formed using the same grammatical rules as patronymic bynames per Wickenden. Unmarked patronymics are registerable in Russian by precedent of the September 2007 LoAR Cover Letter in the submission of the name Mariia Kotok with multiple period examples given. http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2007/09/07-09cl.html Admittedly, we have not found any examples of unmarked metronymics, which isn't surprising, given the rarity of women's names in general and metronymic names in particular. However, there is no grammatical reason to disallow unmarked metronymics (whilst allowing unmarked patronymics) since metronymics and patronymics follow the same grammatical rules.

Her armory has been registered under the holding name Ana of Ramshaven.

Badge. (Fieldless) A badger dormant in annulo sable marked argent.

This device is returned for redraw, for violating SENA A2C2 which states "Elements must be drawn to be identifiable." Here, the posture of the central charge impairs its identifiability. Additionally, no documentation was provided that this posture was used in medieval heraldry.
