THL Khalidah bint Yahya'a (Nicole Riviezzo)

rampart@outlandsheralds.org

Unto the Sovereigns and members of the College of Arms of the Society, does Khalidah bint Yahya'a, Rampart Herald send her greetings.

What follows is the December 2016 Letter of Intent for the Kingdom of the Outlands.

I would like to thank Green Anchor & The NE Calontir Commenting Group, Aspen, Brenna Lowri o Ruthin, ffride wlffsdotter, Coblaith Muimnech, Michael Gerard Curtememoire, and all of the heralds who were kind enough to contribute to internal commentary on OSCAR.

It is my intent to register this December the following items from the Outlands' College of Heralds.

This item was on the 03-2017 LoAR

5: Danielle de la Rochelle - Resub Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in November of 2015, via the Outlands.

Per bend argent and azure, a mullet fimbriated counterchanged

Previous item, Per pale azure and argent, on a mullet fimbriated a mullet counterchanged, returned on 11-2015 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2015/11/15-11lar.html#Outlands_returns26), stating: {This device is returned for conflict with the device of Richard Longstride: Per pale azure and argent, a mullet counterchanged. Fimbriation does not count for difference. This emblazon is identical to Richard's emblazon with the exception of two counterchanged sets of fimbriation. In resubmission, the submitter should be careful to avoid excessive counterchanging. SENA A3F4 states "Any other counterchanging of charges over other charges must similarly be attested to be registered."}

Previous item, Per pale azure and argent, on a mullet fimbriated a mullet within an orle counterchanged, returned on 07-2016 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2016/07/16-07lar.html#Outlands_returns23), stating: {This device is returned for excessive counterchanging. SENA A3F4 states "Any other counterchanging of charges over other charges must similarly be attested to be registered." As in the previous submission, no documentation was provided by the submitter or commenters to justify the counterchanging of the tertiary mullet.}

We believe this submission clears the conflict with Richard Longstride by changing the line of division for the field, and for the primary charge, and addresses the objection to excessive counterchanging.

Further we believe this to be clear of Kyneburth Boithuile, Per bend argent and azure a mullet of eight points counterchanged, a bordure sable semy of quatrefoils argent (by virtue of the removal of the secondary and tertiary charge groups), and Ghislaine d'Auxerre, per bend azure and argent, a compass star countrerchanged (by virtue of reversing the colors of the field and of the primary charge).

Submitter has also indicated a willingness to change the line of division to a bend sinister without further consultation if necessary to avoid conflict; other changes must be approved separately.

This device was conflict checked on the ILoI by Green Anchor. No conflicts were found.

12: Maralda filia Guidi Normanni - New Name

Submitter desires a feminine name.

MARALDA - GUIDO - NORMANNUS: All three names are found in : "South Italian Names from the Norman Kingdom, 11th - 12th Centuries", https://s-gabriel.org/names/giano/normanitalian.html

Originally submitted as <Maralda filia Guido Normannus> but commentors on the ILoI quickly noticed construction issues and offered alternatives with document support. The submitting herald commented on the ILoI that the submitter liked the alternative of <Maralda filia Guidi Normanni> best and wished to change the submitted name accordingly so Kingdom has done so.

Additional Documentation provided by Coblaith Muimnech & ffride wlffsdotter:

The article cited gives "Maralda" as a feminine given name recorded in 1117 and "Guido" as a masculine given name recorded in 1078 and contains eight male names incorporating the byname "Normannus" with dates ranging from 1081 to 1130. All of these were recorded in Cava. Unfortunately, the article draws on an English-language tertiary text which does not faithfully transcribe names, so we have to guess at certain things. The overall pattern "[feminine given name] daughter of [masculine given name][masculine byname]" appears the article's version of three feminine names dated to between 1115 and 1155 (also recorded in Cava). Given the date (and the article's mention of Latinized given names), it's likely the original source materials were in Latin. We could assume that the book's author simply replaced "filia" with "daughter of", and that reversing that gives a correctly constructed name. But, then, SENA states that in Italian "Latinized patronymic bynames usually are just the father's name in the genitive form, without filius/filia," (http://heraldry.sca.org/sena.html#AppendixAItalian), and we can't be sure the author of the book didn't simply decide the best way to functionally translate unmarked bynames was to add "son of" and "daughter of" to them. He almost certainly changed the case of the fathers' names, which all seem to be in the nominative; they would normally be in the genitive in either Latin or Italian. If the original documents used unmarked patronymics, I'd think either "Maralda Guidi Normanni" or "Maralda Guidi Normannus" would be expected; I'm not sure which. (You can see multiple examples of "Guidi", the genitive form of "Guido", used as a patronymic in Juliana de Luna's Masculine Names from Thirteenth Century Pisa--http://heraldry.sca.org/names/pisa/pisa.html.) If the original documents used "filius" and "filia", I'd expect either "Maralda filia Guidi Normanni" or "Maralda filia Guidi Normannus".

I would tentatively suggest that Guido Normannus should be in the genitive case, as Maralda is his daughter. So...Maralda filia Guidonis Normanni or Maralda filia Guidi Normanni? (Based on the genitive case example of Guidonis in an Italian Latin-language document dated 1179 on DMNES - http://dmnes.org/cite/Guidonis/1179/CartHaut and genitive Guidi dated 1100 - http://dmnes.org/cite/Guidi/1100/RCI-Cam1)

It conflicts with the device of Frewin Finnbogason, Per saltire gules and sable, a Norse serpent nowed argent. There is a single DC for the changes to the field. It also conflicts with the device of Asbjorn Gustavsson of Roed, Azure, a Norse Jelling-beast nowed, erect and reversed argent, with a single DC for the field. The reversing of the Jelling-beast in Asbjorn's device refers to the position of the head which does not count for difference.}
