Middle ILoI dated 2014-10-11

Greetings unto Edward Dragon, Konrad Rouge Scarpe, and the commenting heralds of the Middle Kingdom.

Enclosed are the assembled submissions received in the month of September. Commentary is due by November 10, 2014.

Calybrid

Escutcheon

1: Aurora Lucia Marinella -New Badge

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in September of 2011, via Æthelmearc

(Fieldless) On a fesswise cushion per fess azure and gules a demi-sun issuant from the line of division Or.

2: Brynniulfr Herleifsson -New Augmentation of Arms

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in July of 2013, via the Middle

Quarterly sable and vert a bear's head erased and a bordure argent and for augmentation in base a quill pen fesswise argent enflamed proper.

3: Cynwrig ap Lewelyn -Resub Appeal of Laurel Return of Device

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in October of 2004, via the Middle

Azure, three snakes nowed in a trefoil knot Or.

The original submission, Vert, four snakes nowed in a quatrefoil knot Or, was returned by Laurel January 2014.

This device is returned for visual conflict under SENA A5D2, which states that "two arrangements of charges may create a design that is nearly indistinguishable visually, even though there is sufficient technical difference between them." This device is in conflict with the badge of Eilis ni Roibeard O'Boirne, (Tinctureless) A quatrefoil knot. Technically, there is a DC for tincturelessness, and a DC for the difference between snakes and a knot. However, "serpents are significantly different (a CD) from cords, but may continue to have visual conflict with knots... [Abu Ahmed Khalid al-Rashid, R-Atlantia, December 2011 LoAR]" While a change of tincture does typically clear visual conflict, in this case it cannot as Eilis's badge is tinctureless, and so could be depicted in the same tinctures at Cynwrig's submission.

4: Damiana Evstokhivna Sodnitsina -Resub Name Change From Holding Name

OSCAR NOTE: filing name should not be registered for a primary name change. It was, in in February of 2015, via the Middle.

Old Item: Damiana of Cleftlands, to be retained as an alternate name.

Previous submission , Damiana Evstakiyivna Sodnyitsa, was returned by Laurel in May, 2014.

"The submission constructed Evstakiyivna as a patronymic derived from the documented Evstokhi. However, this patronymic construction is not documented and is not grammatically correct even today. In commentary, Sofya la Rus was able to document the grammatically correct patronyms; the closest to the submitted form is Evstokhivna.

The submission asserted that Sodnyitsa was a Ukranian word meaning "rider, horseman." Commenters could not confirm that information and no documentation for it was included. The closest sounding name that commenters could find was the masculine name Sotnitsa. Following a marked patronymic like Evstokhivna, the most likely form is Sodnitsina. Therefore, Damiana Evstokhivna Sodnitsina is a registerable form of this name. However, given the level of the change and that the second byname is different in meaning, we are returning this to allow the submitter to consider her options."

The Submitter accepts the proposed form, and is resubmitting to request that the change be made from the holding name to <Damiana Evstokhivna Sodnitsina> but has provided no documentation other than Laurel's decision.

5: Eginolf von Basel -Resub Appeal of Laurel Return of Device Change

OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in January of 2005, via the Middle

Old Item: Bendy Or and azure, a wolf's head erased ululant contourny gules maintaining in its mouth an egg argent, on a chief Or three eagles gules., to be retained as a badge.

This is a resub for Eginolf von Basel. His arms were returned on 07-2013 LoAR and can be found in OSCAR here: http://oscar.sca.org/index.php?action=145&id=31128

Eginolf von Basel. Device change. Bendy azure and gules, a wolf's head contourny erased Or maintaining in its mouth an egg argent.

While the submitter provided sufficient documentation for this low-contrast multiply-divided field, the documentation was not sufficient for the combination of this field with a primary charge partially obscuring it. Therefore we must reluctantly return it for insufficient documentation of an Individually Attested Pattern.

This device is also returned for conflict with the device of Wulfgar der Krieger, Gyronny of six palewise sable and argent, a wolf's head erased contourny Or. There is one DC for the change in field, but nothing for the maintained egg.
